Conservation biology

Conservation biology refers to the application of science and ecology for the protection of the earth’s biodiversity. It is a relatively recent field and has been developed during the past decades.

The concept conservation biology is in response to the emerging biodiversity crisis all around the globe. It basically includes integration of theory  and applied research. It includes much of ecology but extends it with social sciences, policy, and management.

Causes of Biodiversity Crisis

The most severe reason for the biodiversity crisis is the crisis of natural habitats, particularly because of the shifting and relocating of tropical forests into agricultural habitats.

Earth’s Biodiversity is also immensely affected by the overpowered hunting and poaching of some specific species , by commercial forestry, human habitats and by climate change. Pollution factors such as air and water pollution are also responsible for the same level of contribution towards biodiversity crisis.

The major goal of conservation biology is to look for ways to avoid and rectify the damages that human beings have been  causing to the environment’s biodiversity. I

Necessary pointers comprises the generation of science-based techniques for conserving endangered  species on larger landscapes ( marine environments).

Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity means the richness of biological species and variation. The extent of biodiversity ranges from the variation in the genetics  of individuals amongst the  populations of species, to the richness of species  variations that co-occur in an ecological environment.

Almost 1.7 million of the world’s species have been defined and allocated a scientific and specific  name.Although, biologists have not yet “found out ” most species, especially those living in tropical habitual environments.

According to the researchers, Earth is capable of supporting as many as 30–50 million species, of which 90% are present in the tropical areas. Biologists state that many of the unknown species are invertebrates, specially beetles and other Biodiversity is valuable for many reasons, but these can be grouped into the following three classes:

  1. Intrinsic value. Not considering its worth in terms of the wants and needs of beings, biodiversity has its own, intrinsic value .
  2. Utilitarian value. Humans have a need to harvest forest, wild and domesticated species as sources of their food , materials, and energy. However harvests of the biological environment can be carried out in ways that foster renewal procedures, these renewable resources are often manifested too intensively, concluding  extinction of the resource.
  3. Provision of ecological services. Biodiversity gives various ecological services that are necessary for human welfare. These services encomoasses biological productivity, nutrient cycling, cleansing of water and air, control of erosion , provision of atmospheric oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide.

Dangers To Biological Diversity

Biodiversity is critically threatened by human beings and their selfish activities. The damages caused to the ecosystems are so dangerous and are leading to a biodiversity crisis.

These activities are causing permanent losses of biodiversity, because of the human influences, comprising the extinctions of various species and the losses of natural communities.

There is an urgent need for  substantial changes in humans activities which are negatively  affecting ecosystems.

Earth’s natural diversity has been on the verge of extinction .The fossil statistics deliantes that species and  families have disappeared from Earth. For example, many invertebrate phyla proliferated during an evolutionary radiation at the beginning of the Cambrian era about 570 million years ago, but most of these are now extinct.

Human beings are responsible for almost all of the extinctions of the species on earth which can lead to catastrophic mass extinctionMany examples of extinctions due to human beings are: the dodo , passenger pigeon , and great auk. Many other species are on the verge of extinction, including the plains bison , whooping crane , ivory-billed woodpecker , and right whale. Extinction of such species is due to the human activities such hunting, over poaching and the disturbance of natural habitats.

The loss of Earth’s biodiversity is occurring due to the extensive losses of tropical  forests, ecosystems. Since, tropical forests are rich in various species, loss of natural tropical habitat results in extinctions of animals.

The mission of conservation biology is to analyse the causes and effects of the modern crisis and extinction of the globe’s biodiversity. It is also responsible to apply scientific principles to rectify as well as prevent the destruction This is mainly done by saving populations and safeguarding natural areas.

Conservation At The Population Level

Endangered species  can be saved by programs that surges their breeding  and improves their  survival chances. Components of a population recovery plan ( A plan carried to safeguard the the endangered species) includes steps such as :

(1)Vigilant monitoring of wildlife

(2) Extensive research for the life cycle improvement of endangered species.

(3) the establishment of a captive-breeding programs

(4)Study of the  genetic variation within the species

Conclusion

In conclusion, conservation is the study of conserving the earth’s essential and natural biodiversity which is extremely necessary for the survival of all human beings as well as long life on the planet earth. Biodiversity and conservation biology are closely linked. All species are very important as all of the species and biodiversity have an evolutionary processing relating and dependent on each other. Conservation Biology is for all those species which are no longer present on this planet and also the species which are on the verge of extinction. Conservation biology can save endangered species from going extinct and save the ecological cycles.
