There is a Reciprocal Interaction between Nature and Nurture!

The last two years have brought in radical changes in the lives of people across the globe. Life has taken a chaotic curve. There is a complete change in the perception of the people, towards life, be it on a personal level or professional level. The meaning of life has taken a deep dip in the ocean of fast changes happening around us. But life never stops. It’s like a river that keeps on flowing, sometimes in full flow, sometimes slowly.

After a long gap, life has started coming back to normal almost everywhere. Victor Franki wrote about his ordeal in a concentration camp during the Second World War. His message was “Our main drive or motivation in life is neither pleasure as Freud had believed, nor power as Adolf had believed, but meaning or purpose”. Let’s try to understand LIFE and its meaning.

The meaning of life depends on the concept of life and a sense of fulfillment related to it. To have meaning in life, one has to have a base of either commitment to some values or belief in something. When we are committed to some concept of the meaning of life, it makes life meaningful. This concept of the meaning of life provides us with some framework or benchmark or goal from which to view his or her life. We are here, because of Nature (biology and genetics) and simultaneously because of Nurture (environment or culture). It seeks to understand how our personalities and traits are the product of our genetic makeup and biological factors, and how they are shaped by our environment including our parents, peers, and culture.

We are born with specific genetic traits inherited from our parents. Then there’s a   deep interaction between our genes and our environment. This unique exposure of experience in our environment influences the evolution of traits and at the same time, our genes influence how we interact with our environment. There’s a reciprocal interaction between NATURE AND NURTURE.  Ultimately both these factors shape, who we become. We are always a strive to keep upgrading ourselves. It’s a continuous process that takes place by itself. It can never be halted by any effort. Moreover, the pace of its evolution depends on the availability of the resources, existing conditions, people’s priorities, and other external factors.

Human development refers to the physical, cognitive, and psychological development of humans throughout their lifespan. Physical development involves growth and changes in the body and brain, the senses, motor skills, health, and wellness. Cognitive development involves learning, attention, memory, language, thinking, reasoning and creativity. Psychological development involves emotions, personality, and social relationships. Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive changes, or the addition of physical, economic environmental, social and demographic components.

One constant since the beginning of time might be is “The Change”. However, the fear of change is also constant. Since times immemorial humans have liked soft routines. It makes us feel in control of our lives. Because of constant change, we feel we have no control over our lives. We tend to live in the past and are unwilling to accept changes in our lives. It leads to rejection and depression, which can seriously affect our lives. If a society or a country, rejects the change, gradually it will cease to exist. The inability to accept change can result in stagnation. Stagnation rejects realizing one’s full potential.

The genes determine who we are. Although our environment influences us, our genes determine how it affects us. For this very reason, “NATURE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NURTURE”. Life matters,  because we exist within and among living things as part of an enduring and comprehensible chain of existence. Sometimes life is brutal, but the meaning is derived from perseverance. “One who persists is a person of purpose”, Tao (Chinese Philosopher). This is also true that we are not sure where meaning comes from. Whether it is inherent, or if it is real at all? What we do know is that humans flourish only, when they have the meaning for life, and suffer when they don’t have it. So, it is only the perception that makes a big difference.
