The first reaction to any traumatic experience is the difficulty to have a logical thought. When we are into trauma or in a reactionary mode, negative thoughts crowd the mind, and self-esteem will get dented. Will power and self-confidence take a hit. It’s like, as if the brain has been hijacked and someone has not only replaced it, rather has taken control of it with his version.

The brain goes completely fired and just gets out of our control in that situation. It happens with everybody at some point of the time or the other in our day-to-day life. Whenever any situation puts us on a reactionary trajectory, it is just a common phenomenon. Almost all of us are well aware of quintessential feeling or emotional words: Anger, Excitement, Irritation, Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Depression or Frustration, etc. But, what we are not conscious of is, how we can interchange these synonyms with our thoughts.

When we are in this kind of situation, it is easier to handle it, if we can distinguish the difference between a THOUGHT, a FEELING, and an EMOTION. Knowing, what we are thinking, can assist us in pinpointing automatically, the negative thought that is often antecedent for feeling such as loneliness, sadness, and depression. It will help us in dealing with our minds in that very situation. The FEELING is when we are living in that very moment. EMOTIONS are our subconscious approach in life. And THOUGHT is something we are thinking about.

Feelings are mental experiences, which arise as the brain interprets emotions. Feelings and emotions emerge in a situation from the mind and go hand in hand. But both are different. When we begin to feel a lot, it turns into an emotion. Feelings are temporary. They just knock at the door of our minds and go away. It can be outlined as our perceptions in handling someone or something. Within a single day, we can experience numerous feelings. Moreover, our personal experiences, beliefs, and memories, more often influence our feelings. Therefore two people facing the same situation generally experience different types of feelings. Feelings always come first. Newborn babies have feelings, but they may not have thoughts. Therefore, we experience feelings first and thoughts later. Suppression or denial of feeling for a long time can have severe consequences like anxiety, depression, anger management issues, eating disorders, and finally addictions.

Thoughts are all the entire set of thinking activities, we do in our minds. Thoughts act like a bridge between our feelings and emotions. For example, when any feeling is supported by any thought, you get emotional. Our thoughts represent our philosophies in life, set of beliefs, ideas, and perceptions. Thoughts are the true reflection of our attitude. So, thoughts are the process of thinking. It’s through thoughts that we perceive the world around us. Some thoughts are fleeting, while some thoughts are long-lived. Those long-lived thoughts eventually make up our attitude towards certain things, which can either be negative or positive. Thoughts can vary from simple to very complex.

Now, how and why this trauma followed by reactions and negative thoughts creep into our lives. We are living in two worlds at one time. One is the external world, the physically visible world, or the living conditions. These living conditions provide opportunities and challenges which are almost the same for everybody. The second is the internal world, which equips us with, how we perceive and respond to these living conditions. When our inner world is not comfortable with the external world, it creates conflict. This is where we make all the difference.

The fact is that we make plans, but life’s uncertainties may not allow us to realize these plans. This is the point or the threshold, where we enter in the cobweb of reactions, negativity, and trauma. We don’t keep it limited to ourselves only. We start spreading it in our environment or the external world. Consequently, it starts affecting every situation and all the persons, we come into contact with. What’s the solution?

If we acknowledge and accept our negative emotions, I can assure you that different possibilities will open up. Anger and rage will empower us in fighting for justice. Anxiety can help us in deepening our surrender and in building faith. Guilt can motivate us to change and become better people. Grief can make us grateful, valuing what we have. We can convert every negative thought, emotion, and feeling into a mystical guide in life. So, life is what we make it. It is only emptiness. You fill it and make it completely by the way you want to live.
