“An advanced city is not one where the poor use cars, but rather one where even the rich use public transport”

A few years ago, when the first vehicles were invented, the number of people who actually had a vehicle, or learned how to drive, was not much. However, in more recent years, the worldwide population increased at an uncontrollable pace; the number of people who learned how to drive in a single family became more than one, with each licensed driver having their own car or bike.

With the rise in the number of vehicles on the roads, the burning of fossil fuels is going to increase, which will eventually result in an increase in the number of greenhouse gases. As the demand for fossil fuels grows, we can be certain that at some point in the very near future, we are going to run out of it because, as we know, fossil fuels are a non-renewable source of energy. Because of the fast decline of fossil fuels, manufacturers are increasing their prices, which we are not a big fan of.

With all these negative impacts, I am pretty sure that a lot of us want to switch to safer, cheaper, and more convenient modes of transportation, but we don’t know where to start. Not to worry. There are many new green transportation options available in the market which we can benefit from in 2021.

Using a bicycle is one of the most efficient ways to travel. It does not require any fuel, and it doesn’t emit any toxic gases either. You can also stay fit by pedaling to nearby places. Don’t worry about the price because bicycles are affordable for the common man. If you don’t think you are ready to commit to buying a bicycle, you can even rent them nowadays. You can also use rollerblades or skateboards.

There is also a new kind of bicycle called Electric Bicycles. These bicycles have an electric engine, and you don’t really need to put much effort into pedaling. They don’t emit any gases that cause pollution either. A small disadvantage may be that it consists of many parts which require maintenance.

You may have seen a lot of electric cars and electric autos running around. These vehicles are cheaper and safer for the environment. They don’t require fuels and they run on a battery that can be charged without taking too much time. A disadvantage may be that it has a lesser range than petrol or diesel cars and it cannot be used for long-distance use unless you are sure that there are charging stations on the way. Since we have not yet fully turned to using electric cars, the chances of having charging stations on the highway and hill stations are less in India. So, most people don’t want to take the risk. Maybe in the future, when the government provides enough charging stations, more people will make the switch to electric cars.

Cars, bikes, and autos are not the only ones going electric. Nowadays, electric trains are becoming a necessity. These trains are powered by hanging wires and electric rails which store energy like batteries. These trains can travel super-fast, reaching speeds of up to 200 mph, while still ensuring the safety of the passengers in them. You have to admit; green transportation is looking pretty cool right now.

Hybrid cars and buses are available, which either run on fuel or electricity. Hybrid cars recharge their batteries automatically in the breaking state. Even though Hybrid cars still emit greenhouse gases, the amount of gases they release is way less than conventional cars. The disposal of these cars’ batteries should also be carefully done as it may have some environmental impacts.

You might have heard of the new Mercedes-Benz Ciatro G BlueTec Hybrid buses, which use either diesel or natural gas as fuel and make use of 4 electrical wheel hub motors together with automotive lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries can store large amounts of energy derived from a diesel generator, and these buses also recharge their batteries while braking.

Using public transport, like buses, can reduce the number of individual vehicles on the road. This, in turn, reduces pollution and reduces the intake of fuels. Using buses is also cheaper than using your own car every day, as you don’t have to spend a lot of money on fuel.

Carpooling is also another way to reduce pollution and fuel wastage. Suppose four or five of you living in a neighborhood work at the same place. It would not be sensible if each person went to the same place in a different car, right? You could carpool together and alternate days. If on Monday one person drives you, then another person drives on Tuesday, and so on. This way you have time to socialize and make new friends at your workplace as well.

Considering all this, it is time that we all make a switch to Green Transportation. Try to reduce fuel consumption whenever you can because we are running low on Fossil fuels. If you need to go to a nearby store, try cycling, or even walking if it is close enough. Walking with your friends or family can be really relaxing and you may even find time to get to know each other better. When you are not in a car shielded from the world around you, you notice small things around you like the beauty of nature, birds in the sky, friendly neighbors as well. Instead of leaving carbon footprints behind, leave your footprints in the sand for future generations.
