Vikhroli Mangroves: The City’s Breathing Element
One of Maharashtra’s largest private mangrove forests is the 2,000 hectares of mangroves in Vikhroli. They are managed by the Godrej Foundation since the 1940s. More than 16 different species of mangroves, 82 butterfly species, 208 bird species, 13 crab species, 7 prawn species, 20 fish species, and a few mammals call this place home. These dense thickets of vegetation act as a natural barrier, protecting coastal areas and human settlements from the brunt of nature’s fury.
Godrej and Boyce have been working to research, record, and monitor the varied flora and fauna of the Vikhroli mangroves. To date, 37 of the 82 spider species, as well as 209 birds, 82 butterflies, 32 reptiles, and 6 mammal species have been identified there. In addition, “Mangroves” became the first forest in India to receive ISO 14001 certification in 1997.
The Vikhroli Mangrove’s significance extends beyond its physical attributes. It is a sanctuary for a rich array of plant and animal species, some of which are endangered or critically endangered.
