5000 Years of plastic, 5 seconds of use.

Plastic

Thirteen is known to be an unlucky number, but will SDG goal 13: climate action, be unlucky too? The relationship of nature and mankind is interconnected. Without a battery, a remote wouldn’t work, and without a remote, the battery wouldn’t have any purpose.

Similarly, without mankind, nature wouldn’t have any purpose, and mankind wouldn’t be able to survive without nature. Humans need sunlight, warmth, water, food, air, and so much more, all provided by nature. Though knowingly or unknowingly, we are destroying the only thing keeping humanity afloat. Nature.

We use energy for everything. From something as simple as turning on the light to something as extravagant as flying across the world. However, when we look the other way, we learn there’s more harm caused than good. The oil we use traps heat into the atmosphere, leading to disastrous effects.

If we don’t adapt to other sources of energy soon, there will come a day when we won’t be able to power our devices. Solar, wind, hydro, and biomass—there are so many renewable, clean sources of energy. Why depend on the least environmentally friendly option? Why put yourself out of the frying pan and into the fire to save some money?

Alongside that, there has been a massive increase in trends of overconsumption. One moment everyone wants a Stanley; the next everyone is wide-eyed over Owalas. This would fill up every corner of your house and later fill up every corner of this earth for eternity. Plastic can have a lifespan of up to 5000 years; that is 66 generations of humans.

It is so intrusive and abundant that it was found in the world’s most isolated place. It was found in the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest part of the ocean. Why should we resort to plastic when we have materials like bioplastic? In fact, we can make bioplastic at home with materials from the kitchen.

In spite of plastic being bad for the environment, there are still methods to make it sustainable. We can recycle it, reducing plastic while conserving energy.

Our population is growing at a rapid rate, and with that, so is our need for land, but that doesn’t mean we slash down our main need for sustenance. What purpose does it serve to cut trees to make clinics for symptoms that could have been prevented with more oxygen?

Recently a health-conscious vlogger visited a metropolitan city; there he carried an air purifier with him to prevent any damage to his body. Is this really the future we want to live in? Here we slice down all our trees to build another high-rise building? Why? Because we want to invest in real estate. Why don’t we invest in our future and plant more trees? The number of residences left empty is equal to almost two times the population of the USA.

In the last few decades, the globe has developed rapidly in the industrial field. Especially in the transport field. Not over 200 years ago we used to ride in bullock carts, and now we fly in planes. Our mindset has also evolved; we now value time and money over everything else.

Cars have proven to be the most time-efficient, but they create a massive carbon footprint. People take planes to cover distances runners cover often, and they take cars to drive to places where penguins could have walked, just to save some time. Instead, we should take public transport or walk. This would not just improve our health, but it would also improve our Earth.

It’s not that planes, cars, or plastic are evil, but using too much can lead to disastrous effects. Humans discovered plastic in the mid-1800s, but the usage of plastic only became a problem after 100 years. Why? because during that time, overconsumption surged.

We should stop buying pointless items or unnecessarily taking private transport when you can easily make a more sustainable choice or encouraging deforestation either directly or indirectly to build more infrastructure. Let’s move towards a brighter future.
