We are in the midst of a "Global epidemic of loneliness". 1

loneliness

In the last three decades, the pace of change in our lives has grown beyond anyone’s imagination. In today’s world, we are more connected than ever before, but only digitally or virtually. We now can interact with people all over the world with the click of a button.

The whole world has grown into a global village and now we are no less than global citizens, where all of us are connected through various social media platforms. But in reality, are we not lonelier than before. Some experts say that we are in the midst of a “Global epidemic of loneliness”. The surface-level connections are diminishing the true and deep connections, we feel with people who know, care, and love us. Building strong relationships is a thing of the past. We are living in a time of true disconnection.

Human beings are inherently social creatures. As far back as we can trace, humans have traveled, hunted, and thrived, only in social groups. Humans who have separated from their groups or tribes, often suffer severe consequences. Family or society which are part of these social groups provides us with an important part of our identity. In current times, remaining socially active and remain connected especially in an increasingly isolated world is more relevant than ever before. Social, economic, and philosophical forces always keep on working on all of us. They keep on working parallelly, simultaneously, and continuously. Their percentage may vary from time to time.

But there is no time when they cease working. “ONLY CONNECT” the real connection with people helps in handling these forces. As per the report published in PLOS Medicine, people with strong social ties are likely to live longer than those with limited connections. One study conducted by Martin Seligman an eminent psychologist “People who are socially connected tends to be happier than those who are not as social”. When work and life stresses are on the rise, having the support of real social network always boost your resilience and help in managing all kind of stresses in life.

Eye connect conversations and focus on meaningful discussions over a cup of coffee helps in evaporating all the stress in life. By giving time to a worthy cause, will always make you feel as though you have more time at your disposal. Research shows that, when we spend more time on others, our sense of our own time expands. Today, we live in a world, where we are closely connected with people, socially, politically, economically, and environmentally.

Every news channel to newspaper highlights in different ways, how closely we are connected with people and the incidents and events happening around us. Every incident affects our lives directly or indirectly, whether we are involved in it or not, whether we like it or not. There’s a story about four people named EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, and NOBODY.

There was an important job to help make the world a better place. Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could’ve done it. Somebody get angry because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought, Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody would not do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done it.

Question is, who was the best person to do it? Who could’ve done it? Why it couldn’t be done? Because everybody in the world is connected, but nobody is affected by what’s happening around us. Are we affected by what’s happening around us? We have all the sources of information from print media to electronic media, mainstream media to social media, which keep us equipped with all the minor to major events happening around us. But do we get affected by the events which leave a deep scar on the soul of the society or which trigger future long term consequences? Yes sometimes for a moment, but majorly no. That’s the situation of insensitivity in society.

Because in real terms we are not connected. We have isolated ourselves from everything, the people, the society, the situations, nature, the environment, and everything existing around us. We have created a shield of our insecurities, fears, greed, egos and thus created perceptions, which disconnect us from reality and realizations. “Connection is the energy that exists between people only, when they feel, are seen, heard, and valued. When they can give and receive without judgment.

When they can derive sustenance and strength from the relationship”, Brene Brown. Feeling socially connected depends on the quality and number of meaningful relationships. It blooms with family, friends, and acquaintances. In all aspects of life, it is not only essential, rather necessary for our health, happiness, mental outlook, and overall performance.

Real Connections take us to deep understandings, whereby sharing unresolved issues and unanswered questions keep our stress levels in check. It also helps in keeping our minds remain engaged in productive work. It makes us more collaborative and creative. So we need to remain “ONLY CONNECTED” with the people, the environment, and with everything in the surroundings to live a good life.
