Humans are the biggest asset for our country. But with the increase in population, these assets are turning into a liability. With the exploding population, poverty is rising in India. For more job opportunities everyone is moving to urban areas. Urbanization and poverty are the major reasons for environmental degradation. Our ancestors have blessed us with enough resources for our needs but what are we doing? Are we going to give this ruined environment to our successors?

We have ample amounts of resources to meet our needs, but what about the rising greed? Not only the population is rising in India, but greed is also increasing. We are imposing a lot of pressure on the limited resources of our country. We have lost the rationality of using the resources with sincerity. To meet our end needs we are exploiting natural resources. This rise in population is a huge pressure on the arable land. Land degradation is one of the most common impacts of this pressure. Our overpopulated India is demanding more energy and power supply each day. Our demand for 24 hours electricity is never-ending. But where does this electricity come from? At the cost of our environment. Not only energy, more people demand more water resources too. For meeting those needs they exploit water resources, contaminate the water.

Besides all these luxuries our hearts and minds are still unsatisfied. We are demanding more luxuries and for filling them the role of the industry comes in. The industry is playing the cause of dangerous impact on the environment. Increased industrialization is leading to more pollution and global warming.

According to the Population Reference Bureau, the world’s population was 6.14 billion in mid-2001. India contributes 1033 million population in this data. The Bureau estimates that by 2050 India will be the first most populated country in the world. China will be the second one.

These scenarios raise the challenge of sustained development without damaging the environment.

Poverty and Environment

Poverty has been both the cause and impact of environmental pollution. In rural areas, people are dependent on agriculture. Even after working very hard for the entire year their income is low. Because of the poverty-stricken situation, they move to urban areas. This populates the city. Overpopulation in one place causes the degradation of natural resources. Because these poor people are not able to meet their basic needs they use common resources. They use the water from the river and ponds to reduce their thirst. The water in the river and ponds gets contaminated because of sewage disposal. This makes the people ill and impacts their health.

They cut the forest for their needs which harms the natural resources and extinct them.

Poor people are not privileged enough to go to school. Because of lack of education, they are not aware of the consequences of over pollution. In rural areas, there are more people in one family because of the lack of knowledge. This over-pollution leads to overexploitation of resources. Because of untreated disposal in the river water, these people suffer from health problems. Thus a degraded environment itself leads to impoverishment again. Poverty keeps on reinforcing pollution and vice versa.

Destruction of habitats

With the rise in population the demand for a more luxurious life increases. To meet their needs people damage the habitats of animals, cut down trees to create space for bungalows. India has the 12 mega diversities of the world. it contributes to the world’s 7 percent flora and 6.5 percent fauna.

With the greed of modernization increased population is directly impacting this precious biodiversity. Habitats of animals are being destroyed because of developmental projects. Deforestation is continuously rising for building expensive and comfortable homes. And what about the comfort of those who can not speak for themselves? What about those animals who can not speak up for their rights. People are not even giving a second thought about them. They are busy building their comfortable spaces.

If the destruction continues, the extinction of 46,000 plant species and 81,000 animal species is not far.

You might be aware of the rising air pollution in the capital of India, Delhi. Delhi is among the most overpopulated cities in India. Rise population has to lead to over exploration of all the resources.

The uncontrollable use of vehicles for traveling has led to these problems. The smoke released by these vehicles is the cause of global warming. This increases the greenhouse gases in the environment and increases the temperature.

Not only the vehicles are the reason for pollution. Smoking is also among the most discussed reasons for environmental degradation.

The burning of fossil fuels for meeting the energy demand is also the cause of increased carbon dioxide in the environment. This impacts the ozone layer and depletes it. It is the reason for several health diseases too, like cancer and skin problems. Asthama, a respiratory disease has become common in Delhi because of pollution.

Conclusion

If the population keeps on increasing then the environment will face some major issues. There won’t be water to drink, food to eat. There will be bulbs in our house but no electricity to switch them. India will slowly die from starvation and hunger if the exploitation continues. The public should be aware of the consequences of increased population. People should keep in check their family growth rate. Using a proper preventive measure for decreasing the population is very important. This is an alarming situation that needs our due attention. As said well by Gandhi ji, “we have enough for our need but not for our greed.” Sustainable development is very essential in today’s scenario.
