The text was approved during the first session of the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) on Wednesday.

It acknowledges that “land/sea use change, overexploitation, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species” are the key direct causes of biodiversity decline.

The document emphasizes the urgent need for coordinated action to chart a course for nature and people in the future, “where biodiversity is conserved and used responsibly, and the benefits derived from the use of biological improvement are shared fairly and adequately, as an integral part of sustainable development.”

Leaders from around the world agreed to reverse “present biodiversity loss and guarantee that biodiversity is put on a path to recovery by 2030 at the latest, towards the full fulfilment of the 2050 Vision of ‘Living in Harmony with Nature.'”

They also pledged to boost “financial, technological, and capacity-building assistance to poor countries in order to implement the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in accordance with the Convention’s provisions.”

Participants from all around the globe are gathering online for the United Nations’ biodiversity conference, which will be held in Kunming, southwest China, from October 11 to 15. The conference will focus on ecosystem protection and the avoidance of catastrophic biodiversity loss.

CURRENT SCENARIO

Kunming Declaration 2

The meeting, which has been postponed owing to COVID-19, seeks to present action plans for the next ten years in terms of environmental conservation. The second stage, which will take place offline from April 25 to May 8, 2022, will see governments agree on a post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Global biodiversity loss is at an all-time high, according to the World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report 2020. Between 1970 and 2016, the population sizes of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish decreased by an average of 68 percent, according to the research. It also noted a 94 percent drop in the tropical subregions of the Americas, the biggest drop ever recorded anywhere on the planet.

KUNMING — On October 13, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) in Kunming, Yunnan Province, Southwest China, approved the Kunming Declaration.

At the Elevated Segment of the first half of COP15, Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu announced the acceptance of the declaration.

“The proclamation will send a strong message to the world, demonstrating our desire to address the challenge of biodiversity loss and our commitment to taking firmer action on the problems discussed at this high-level conference,” Huang added.

The primary achievement of this meeting is the Kunming Proclamation, a political declaration. The declaration pledges to ensure the development, adaptation, and implementation of a comprehensive post-2020 global biodiversity framework to reverse current biodiversity losses and put biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030, at the latest, in order to achieve the 2050 Vision of “Living in Harmony with Nature.”

The Leaders’ Pledge for Nature:

United to Reverse Biodiversity Loss by 2030 for Sustainable Development sees world leaders commit to taking immediate action over the next ten years as part of the UN Decade of Action for Sustainable Development. It comes only days before the UN Biodiversity Summit, conveying a strong, unifying message that the world needs step up ambition to prevent and reverse ecological damage for the sake of people and wildlife, as well as to aid in the fight against climate change.

Key commitments in the pledge include:

Taking immediate action to reverse biodiversity loss for sustainable development by 2030, including the formulation and full implementation of an ambitious and transformative post-2020 global biodiversity framework to be agreed in Kunming, China, next year;

  • Transitioning to sustainable production and consumption patterns, as well as sustainable food systems, that fulfil people’s needs while maintaining within the limits of the earth. Switching to deforestation-free regenerative agriculture is one example.
  • Maintaining a sustainable management of our ocean and concluding the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea discussions;
  • Pollution reduction on land and in the air, including the removal of ocean plastic waste;
  • A green and just solution to the present health and economic crises, incorporating a One Health* approach and placing biodiversity, climate, and the environment as a whole at the centre of recovery plans, investments, decisions, and activities across the board;
  • To achieve people’s well-being and protect the planet, more money should be invested in biodiversity and nature-based solutions, as well as a commitment to eradicating or repurposing detrimental investments and subsidies and coordinating financial flows with environmental commitments and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Conclusion

The UN Biodiversity Conference 2020’s subject is “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth,” according to the proclamation. China has introduced the concept of ecological civilisation.

“The Kunming Declaration outlines some of the important factors required for success,” the members argue, “including mainstreaming, subsidy redirection, rule of law, and full and effective engagement of indigenous peoples and local communities.”
