Life is a beautiful journey that throws several challenges in its path. When skilled with the right variables and understandings, each new experience that comes our way helps us in managing difficulties. The majority of us look at struggles with helplessness and despair. We forget that every moment we are being recreated with new capabilities. We are a part of a seamless web of life that exists and extends to the cosmos. Nature always tries to cooperate in this endeavor of ours. Every season comes up, with a new inspiration, a new insight. The thirst of Earth in the summer, the tapping of raindrops in July, and the fragrance of the Spring, all trigger and activate the innate reservoir of energy lying in every individual, and remind us of the intensity of the desire our spirit possesses. But, we often digress and divert our attention from the call of the inner self, which is called VALUES, and pay the price in the form of inviting restlessness, dissatisfaction, stress, and unfulfilled life. All of us have been becoming victims of this valueless system in the world.

Today’s world is changing at a fast pace, increasingly unpredictable, impossible to analyze systematically, and also beyond accurate interpretation. A state of flux has replaced the sense of certainty, stability, and familiarity that people were used to. This is a new normal. This type of environment can be described using the term VUCA which stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. The majority of us are always on the hunt for acquiring professional skills without identifying what we want from life which we can call our inherent VALUES. We are blindly following others’ success, systems, and ways of life, without knowing what we want from them. Values are the degree of importance of something or action, intending to determine which actions are the best to do or what is the best way to live. Values are, the only things that matter in our lives, the things that determine our view of the world, our beliefs, our outlook, and our attitude. It is something innate and varies from individual to individual.

Values exist, whether we recognize them or not. Life can be made much easier when we acknowledge our values. When values become the base of decision-making, we can be sure to keep our sense of rationality and integrity. Subsequently, since we know what is right, we can approach our decisions with more clarity and better confidence. When we define our values, we discover what is important to us. Today we have forgotten personal values and are engrossed in acquiring only professional skills. This is the reality of today and the cause of volatility in life. Life skills that are so important for personal values are developed through life experiences. Observing the world around us and figuring out what processes get the best results can add to our life skills. Every phase of life teaches us, how to grow, how to heal, and how to deal.
Many of us have intelligence. We enhance our knowledge with education in the best institutions. But ultimately, our personality, our natural inclinations, and our emotions manage most of our decisions and actions. The core life skills include the ability to cope with emotions and the resulting stress, critical thinking, and decision-making. Affirmative communication and accepting failure as a learning process is the best way to deal with the challenges of life. Empathy and altruism, always help us in overcoming conflict and promotes understanding. It helps us in restricting the mind to cross the boundary of self-control and enter the confusion zone. We must know where to draw the line in everything that we think and do.

Home is the first school and the mother is the first teacher for a human. Children are great observers and fast learners. These days parents give extra attention to their children. Over-indulgence could spoil them and indifference could dishearten them. Family is the closest circle around an individual. It gives a sense of security, comfort, and foundation. A friend’s circle and a social circle are other close circles that influence an individual. The kind of energy we are surrounded with ultimately defines and molds us. Wallowing in self-pity and sulking long on the challenges of life would only make us suffer more. Working for new avenues and finding solutions could only help tide over the surfing waves of tough times. Frustration creeps in and confidence wobbles in difficult times. But if we keep our value system intact, it will always help us to overcome this phase of life. Learning life skills is a continuous process and there’s no end to it.
Today we have made astronomical developments in technology and created all kinds of comforts. But, are we really happy? No society can claim to be civilized and remain at peace if value systems are ignored. One does not develop values just by claiming to be religious. Conscience plays a major role in shaping minds. When we think good and positive, we build a little bit of neural structure. Doing this a few times in a day, for a month, and even for years, will gradually change our brain, and also completely transform how we feel, think and act. Values define and confine the boundaries and teach us to act within them. Values are guiding factors that add substance and self-respect. Lifelong learning is no longer just optional, rather it’s more relevant today. A man will be a mere living creature without his conscience and values.
