The wildlife photographs taken by Melissa are spectacular. She has a definite mission to create awareness among the people, to change their minds and to work for nature conservation. The medium is the message and she said more marvels of nature have to be brought into limelight that will revolutionise people’s vision.
Speaking to mathrubhumi.com, she said that the colour of birds has stirred her. Even though she loves brilliant blues and reds, subtle coloured birds are also beautiful. Every bird has its own personality and its own beauty. One will have to capture it.

Our knowledge of nature and its evolution is growing and expanding. We have to catch up with it. There are so much we are ignorant of and cannot perceive. The complexity and sophistication of the natural system is sometimes even outside the limits of our imagination, she said.

“I became fascinated by whales. I experienced humpback whales swimming next to my kayak. That moment changed my life.Every year I travel to go with them in the Dominican Republic. I read more and more about them. I came into contact with acoustic biologist Katy Payne who with her husband Roger Payne discovered that whales sing songs. My association with her changed my life and vision”, said Melissa Groo.
“I lived with Katy in Africa in the dense and deep forests and interacted with mighty tuskers. I sat silently for long hours to observe the elephants that inspired my photography. Nature is so magnificent. It is beyond definition”, she said about her experience in Africa.
“I fell in love with birds. Their exquisite beauty charmed my heart. Some of them make epic migrations. It is still a mystery. Each bird is a masterpiece of beauty, form and function along with their music. Some of them are so captivating. A world devoid of the sound and music of birds, is not a world apt to live”, Melissa said.
