Well, if you have, then the answer to your question is sadly a yes. Plastic, although one of the marvels of Chemistry, is very dangerous to our environment. It is preferred over other naturally occurring materials as it is durable and can take up to a thousand years to decompose. But, the very fact that it takes such a long time to decompose has today turned out to be one of the most dangerous impacts of plastic. Studies show that the world now produces more than 380 million tonnes of plastic each year, and most of it ends up as pollutants, entering our natural environment and oceans.

Now, as environmental activists around the world fight to create awareness amongst the masses about the dangers of plastic use, a craftsman from Assam, India, has come up with an alternative to tackle the menace of plastic bottles.
Dhritiman Borah, a 36-year-old craftsman from Assam, started manufacturing bottles made out of bamboo as a solution for the ever-growing problem of plastic bottles.

Bamboo, which is the only raw material used by Dhritiman to prepare his eco-friendly bottles, is a safe and smart alternative to plastic bottles. Firstly, bamboos are naturally occurring and decompose much faster than plastic, and they are organic and more durable as well.

How Did it Start?
According to Dhritiman, the idea of producing something sustainable with his craftwork didn’t come all of a sudden. He says that it was instilled in his life at an early age, and this led to him starting his own company at the young age of 16.
Today, with more than 18 years of experience, Dhritiman has successfully turned it into his family business as his younger brother, Gaurav Bora has joined him in his venture.
Challenges So Far
Even though these bottles may seem simple to look at, but Dhritiman says that each bottle takes around five to six hours to make, right from cutting the bamboo to boiling, drying, smoking, joining the separate parts, and giving it all the finishing touches. Also, he works out of a small manufacturing unit set up at his home itself, where he manages to source just 100-150 bamboos every month.
So, the long and tedious manufacturing process along with difficulty in sourcing adequate machinery is one of the biggest challenges faced by Dhritiman and brother.
Another challenge faced by Dhritiman during his initial days was that of market response. In fact, he couldn’t find a single buyer when he displayed his product for the first time at a Delhi Expo.
He had his first big break when he received an order of 200 bottles from the UK earlier last year. Since then, Dhritiman has been able to improve his contacts, and he has also received some local recognition for his noble effort to fight the ever-growing issue of plastic waste.

Future Plans
Thanks to his consistent effort, Dhritiman has been able to overcome most of the challenges he faced during the initial days of his venture.
Dhritiamn says that his plan for his business in the near future is to apply for a patent for his organic bottle design.
