Being Human Is A Process From Potentiality to Actuality 1

Fifty years ago, the world was a different place. Life was a lot different at that time. Since then, life on Earth has completely changed. Today, nobody can demarcate the boundaries of the digital world and physical world, because they are blurring. What I could understand is that now life has become an inordinate complex unsolved puzzle. Despite significant theoretical progress, experimental anomalies, paradoxes, and enigmas have revealed paradigmatic limitations. Living systems or life on Earth, are predominantly CHNOPS (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, and sulfur), homochirality (mix) of sugars and amino acids, home viscous adaptation (maintenance of critical balance), triplet code, and DNA mutation.

In comparison to other species of life on Earth, Human beings (Homo Sapiens) are the most remarkable species. It can easily be seen in comparison with how far we have come in a very short time since we climbed down from trees and emerged out of the caves. The speed with which we are currently advancing leaves the future of humans is open to a wide range of speculation. It is a general belief, that, we have overcome every challenge in the past and will continue to do so in pursuit of our future. A human being can be known by what he does and what he has been, rather than, what he can be, or what he ought to be. The human being is a process in time. It is not complete and probably will never be completed. Being human is an active and dynamic process in the external world. It understands, interprets, and transforms with self and the external world. “Being human is a process from potentiality to actuality”.

The year 1969, was a pivot point in culture, science, and technology. On January 30, of this year, the Beatles played their last show. On July 20, the world watched in awe as Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon. But the greatest global impact on future generations occurred with little fanfare on October 29, 1969. A team of UCLA (the University of California and Los Angeles) graduate students led by prof. Leonard Kleinrock connected computer to computer with a team at the Stanford Research Institute. It was the first host to host communication of ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network), which was the precursor to today’s Internet.

Internet was built from the beginning to be open and extensible. It relied on communities of trust. But today it has the strong downside of false narratives, fake news, and over customization of virtual reality. It has become a tool in the hands of some. But the irony is that we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us. People are considered to be “input” to the process. Now they are not seen as real, thinking, feeling, changing, and evolving beings. As the process evolves further, that is, as algorithms begin to write algorithms, humans may be left completely out of the loop, then only “the robots decide”,

In the future, people will live increasingly only in the world of ideas, concepts, impressions, and interpretations. There will be no space for feelings and emotions. Imagine the kind of life, having only these dimensions of living. Methods will be required to cope with the additional complexities. We have already been ushered into a digital world. Till now the change of digital life is human-driven. Technology will only amplify the societal structures that created it. Digital technologies can be terrific enablers. But the question remains “enablers of what, for whom and of whose vision”? Of what value? If we see fifty years from now, it is like science fiction. We can’t imagine life with QUANTUM COMPUTING, AI, BLOCKCHAIN, VIRTUAL REALITY, IoT, GENETIC ENGINEERING, ROBOTICS, and other developments affecting our lives. It is just too far ahead to imagine, whether we will be in a digital feudal system or a highly democratic system.

The potential of technology for good is huge, but the potential for misuse and abuse, intentional or inadvertent may be greater. Human.

behavior will lead to negative consequences flowing from our technological augmentation. These consequences could be severe as much as our survival as a species. But the question also is, will it be worth surviving in a world like that or to become extinct? Keeping in view the current trend, even if we are replaced by machines, the world will, is likely to be, a better place, without us.
