Tuesday, June 27: After having covered the entirety of Central India last weekend, the southwest monsoon activity over the region will temporarily gather more strength, effectively triggering intense rains this week.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra’s Vidarbha subdivision will all be in for widespread light to moderate showers, along with isolated heavy to very heavy falls (64.5 mm-204 mm), for the next three days — from Tuesday to Thursday, June 27-29.
Furthermore, isolated extremely heavy downpours (more than 204 mm) are expected to drench East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on Tuesday, and the western half of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Given these predictions, the IMD has issued orange alerts (meaning ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions) over the following subdivisions during this forecast period:
Tuesday, June 27: Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh
Wednesday, June 28: Entirety of Madhya Pradesh
Thursday, June 29: West Madhya Pradesh
Friday, June 30: West Madhya Pradesh

This rain spell is being triggered by a low-pressure area that currently lies over north Chhattisgarh, but is likely to move west-northwestwards, towards north Madhya Pradesh, during the next two days. Such low-pressure areas provide the necessary atmospheric conditions for the ascent and condensation of moist air, which leads to rainfall.

Owing to these intense rain forecasts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district to launch two Vande Bharat trains — initially scheduled for June 27 — has been postponed, state CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan revealed.
Meanwhile, IMD observations indicate East Madhya Pradesh started this week on a soaking wet note, with isolated locations across this subdivision recording upto very heavy showers (115.5 mm-204 mm) on Monday.
The wet weather also caused Monday’s daytime temperatures to drop markedly below normal (by 5.1°C or more) at a few places in East MP and at isolated locations in West MP. A similar trend was observed during the early morning hours of Monday as well, with Malanjkhand in East MP recording the lowest minimum temperature across India’s plains at 19.9°C.
These cool and rainy conditions are expected to continue all week, with the IMD predicting no significant changes in countrywide mercury levels for the next five days.
It remains to be seen whether this upcoming spell compensates for the rainfall shortage witnessed by Central India so far this month. Between June 1 and 26, both Madhya Pradesh (63 mm) and Chhattisgarh (83.4 mm) have recorded rain deficits worth 36% and 43% respectively, whereas Maharashtra (51.1 mm) has registered a large deficit worth 70%.
