The COVID-19 pandemic is unique and unparalleled in many ways and has impacted health care systems across the globe. The coronavirus pandemic has turned the world’s attention to the immune system, the body’s protection against disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and other species that we touch, intake, and inhale every day.

In addition to research into the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, it’s essential to check other psychological changes to bring out a potent cure to this pandemic. Our immune systems would have to adapt unaided to COVID-19 before a potential vaccine is available.

Ayurveda: The Magnificent Medical Science

Greenstories-Ayurveda

Ayurveda, a traditional medicine method, developed in India more than 3000 years ago. Ayurveda is derived from Sanskrit terms Ayur (life) and Veda (science or knowledge). Charaka Samhita, a classic Ayurveda text, relates to epidemics’ management and describes immunity to prevent disease progression and preserve homeostasis.

Ayurveda pays greater attention to building the strength of mind and body to cope with various stressors, including infection. Like innate and acquired immunity, the Ayurveda definition of immunity is categorized as normal, chronobiological, and acquired.

Such conventional interventions may have a positive effect on mental health and immune function by modulating psychoneuroimmune pathways. Several allopathic drugs are currently under review for prophylactic use against COVID-19, and existing preventative steps tend to be inadequate. The preventive and therapeutic ability of conventional and alternative medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Yoga can be shown to be effective and great therapy of COVID-19.

India on Use of Ayurveda for treatment on Covid-19

Ayurvedic science has tremendous potential to provide learning and creative perspectives, and proper recording of clinical trials is essential. This will help disseminate results to researchers and policymakers in a scientific manner to draw lessons from the internationally accessible pluralistic information systems.

Several steps have been taken in India to harness the enormous potential of Ayurveda in this pandemic. The Ministry of Ayush, the Nodal Ministry of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, has published guidelines for enhancing immunity and self-care measures using Ayurvedic principles.

The prime minister of India also stated the use of Ayurveda medicines to improve immunity against COVID-19 in his address to the country. This has contributed to a rise in demand for Ayurvedic treatments. The AYUSH framework across the country has also been notified to be called upon to support the nation at any time.

The Ministry of AYUSH recommends the following recommendations for preventive self-care health steps and enhancing immunity regarding respiratory problems.  This is backed by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications.

General Interventions

  1. Drink warm water all day long.
  2. Regular practice in Yogasana, Pranayama, and meditation for at least 30 minutes every day  as recommended by the Ministry of AYUSH
  3. Spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and  Garlic are suggested for cooking.

Ayurvedic Immunity Enhancing Measures

  1. In the morning, take 10gm of Chyavanprash.
  2. Basil) and Dalkini herbal tea.
  3. Adding turmeric to the milk and drinking it regularly

Simple Ayurvedic Measures

  1. Sesame oil/coconut oil or ghee add both in the nasal every morning and evening.
  2. Take one tablespoon coconut oil in your mouth. Do not drink; swish for 2-3 minutes in the mouth, then spit it out. Rinse the mouth with the hot water. You can do this once or twice a day.

Patanjali and Covid-19 Treatment Claims

Yoga guru and businessman Baba Ramdev welcomed medical professionals to fury as he said he had found an ayurvedic cure for combating the coronavirus COVID-19. Patanjali’s founder made a video that said that the ashwagandha medicinal plant was the secret to the virus ward.

The promotional video showed Ramdev keeping the ashwagandha sample, claiming that scientific testing has been done and that the ashwagandha plant does not allow the “mixing of the corona protein with the human protein.” The yoga guru did not offer any scientific evidence to support his argument and said that the study had been submitted to an international journal.

Furthermore, Ramdev advised the Indians to use yoga to improve immunity. Health professionals said that the dissemination of coronavirus misinformation, its propagation, or treatment would significantly affect the control of the pandemic. Doctors and other health workers have strictly believed that COVID-19 does not have a proven remedy. COVID-19 vaccines can take almost two years to create, according to health experts. Experimental medicines are currently being used, including those for treating HIV or malaria, to tackle the virus.

Final Words

Traditional methods can help enhance and reduce the psychological quality of life. Ayurveda has ample potentials and possibilities for both prevention and additional COVID-19 therapy. Therefore, research trials to understand the link between Ayurvedic effects on psychological distress and immune responses to COVID-19 infection are very important.

It is an opportunity to recognize the real potential and the integrative approach of Ayurveda Systems to innovate solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, India is now demonstrating AYUSH ‘s ability to solve this global health crisis. The scientific community must be given every possible care opportunity because we have no vaccine or medical treatment in this unprecedented crisis.
