Covid-19 is a harsh reality of our times but what makes the situation even more challenging is when people panic. As soon as the patient gets his or her Covid-19 report positive, the first reaction of the attendants and patient is to panic and this is where the situation starts worsening.

Patients usually have symptoms of Covid for 3-7days (in many cases more than that) before going for a test (means they were already harbouring a virus) but then they were much more comfortable as compared to the period after the diagnosis.
Remember diagnosis of Covid is not a death warrant. Majority of the patients don’t need treatment, but yes in this second wave of Covid the symptoms are more severe and last longer than cases seen last year. Ultimately this is a viral disease which is more of self-remitting type.
It has also seen that when a patient approaches a doctor he and his family members are already bubbling with half knowledge about treatment and then they expect further expert guidance from the doctor. Not only do they want the doctor to prescribe “best medicine” and some “necessary” tests but as already stated corona still has no definitive treatment as its viral self-remitting disease.
And all the tests are supportive tests to the clinical judgment of clinician except Covid RTPCR ( sensitivity is not uniform). Having understood this let’s see the role of different medications very commonly found on the doctor’s prescription of a Covid patient. Corona became pandemic on 11th March, 2020 and one year is good enough time to understand the role of various medications but still treatment is supportive and based on experience of the doctor.

Plenty of water is suggested but patients flood their stomach thinking that at least excessive water does not have any side effect however water intoxication can be seen though rarely. Keep yourself hydrated and don’t bloat your tummy.
Secondly, patients want themselves to bombard with lots of multivitamins to boost up their immunity. Remember that immunity is not a game for a day or two. By popping in two or three tablets of multivitamins your immunity reaches upto maximum level.
I have seen patients already starting azithromycin and doxycycline on their own, please remember these two drugs have no established role in managing corona as these two drugs are potent antibiotics but corona is a viral disease so per-se they have no direct role.
Thirdly, self-medication comes in the form of Ivermectin which again is antiparasitic and logically has no effect on Covid. Some researches do support them but less likely they are helpful. The drugs found useful for treating sick corona patients in hospitals are steroids and antiviral drug remdesivir. The discussion on these two drugs here are out of purview of this article.
Now let’s understand who should get admitted in a hospital. We all believe that everyone does not need hospitalisation but our calmness can further reduce the rate of hospitalisation.
Who should get admitted is a big question, all pneumonia patients with maintained SPO2 need not get hospitalised rather they should stay at home and keep monitoring SPO2 levels and be in touch with their physician.
If anyone is a little breathless he should try lying on stomach (prone position) and he will find improvement in his breathlessness. Those who can arrange oxygen concentrators or oxygen cylinders at home and are able to maintain SPO2 above 90 percent should try to remain at home. All these steps must be taken under the supervision of your doctor. God forbids if these steps fail to help then only one must try for hospitalisation.
In case hospitalisation is mandatory don’t think that it’s going to be the end of the world. Keep the spirits high and within a short span of 7-10 days the patient shall be back home.
Lastly, try to be at home; don’t ever say that being at home is boredom because those who are in hospital want this so called “boredom” of home. Lucky enough are those who get to stay at home hale and hearty.
Relax, stay cool, calm and stay at home.
