Today, we all face the need to adapt quickly to a very fast-changing world. The changes are happening so fast, that every moment and every day, there is a different challenge. In a world that is growing increasingly complex and changing at an ever-accelerating pace, the human mind unaided with technology, can’t deal satisfactorily with the demand of this ever-changing new world. We are always living on the edge, where small omissions make big difference. Today, humans are in a rapid transition to a new symbiosis in which technology is at the core of every step of life. But, side by side, enhancing the mind through technology still frightens the very existence of humans and humanity.

The human mind is an incredible thing. It can conceive the magnificence of the heavens and the intricacies of the universe. Our traditional thinking is undergoing a profound change. The unaided human mind is increasingly getting limited. It can’t deal with extreme complexities, developing in our everyday lives, because the human mind works relatively slowly. In the past, these limitations were not constraints. But today our enhanced minds came up, against more barriers in dealing with many of today’s challenges, from space travel to surviving in an interconnected, but the hostile and volatile world. So, we are busy without any break, in extending, enhancing, and amplifying our minds by combining them with modern technology.

Today, we require new wisdom to find the best combination of mind and technology, which is called “Digital Wisdom”. Old kinds of wisdom like sticking to one Job for the entire career, or remaining engrossed in the same profession or business for the whole life, no longer make any sense in our contemporary world. Today, the information goes out of date a little far too rapidly. Today, required skills must come from multiple disciplines and sources. New wisdom includes “Learning To Learn” to acquire knowledge and skills rapidly, rather than relying on received knowledge from the past. New wisdom includes enhancing our capabilities with technology, wherever and whenever possible. We also need the new wisdom along with the past only that truly counts, so we can delete, what we no longer require.
“The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than the society gathers wisdom”. Isaac Asimov. There’s a growing gap between the pace of application of technology and human wisdom. In fact, instead of embracing our ability with the support of technology to do more, we are using it only as a crutch to do less. Technology is moving at an increasingly rapid pace, a pace that society is struggling to match. With all the information we have at our fingertips, we are the smartest society in human history. But in exchange, we have seemed to sacrifice our ability to think and wisdom to live a more humanitarian life. “Our future is a race between the growing power of our technology and the wisdom with which we use it. Let’s make sure wisdom wins” Stephen Hawking.
There’s no doubt that the scope in technological advancements will open up new vistas which will revolutionize the ways we think, live, work, eat, communicate and travel. There’s enormous scope for innovation in every aspect of life. Humanity today is at the pinnacle of evolution and there should be no boundary to human endeavor. The earth is becoming too small for us. Our physical resources are draining out at an alarming rate. Mankind has presented our planet with the disastrous gifts of climate change, pollution, rising temperature, reduction of polar ice, deforestation, and decimation of other species. We have reached a stage, where self-destruction is inevitable. Unfortunately, now we have the technological power to destroy every living creature on earth.
Humanity’s technological power is far surpassing our wisdom to apply it. Our technological power is growing much faster than the wisdom to apply it. As long as our technological power exceeds our ability to control it or moderate it, we are going to be doing more harm than good. This includes investigating the possibility of a technological singularity, the hypothetical point at which the growth in computing power allows AI (Artificial Intelligence) radically exceed human intellect in almost all areas.

This is also a fact that human traits, like, passion, empathy, or yearning can never be outsourced to technology. We must try to learn to combine these human traits with the application of technology to make the wisest decisions. We also need to turn to technology for enhanced ways of learning for the development of online communities, which is a reality now. We have reached a stage, where no society can survive in the absence of it. To do this, we need to develop digital wisdom. The unenhanced human is no longer the smartest thing in this world. In all criticality, with awareness and commitment, we can maintain our wisdom in this fast-changing environment, with rapid technological advancements. We must play an active role in growing our wisdom with the help of technology, not despite it.
