Paint Away, the Eco-Friendly Way 1

Most of the commercially available paints contain several heavy metals such as lead and chromium, causing an increase in concerns due to their toxicity at high exposure, and it also builds up in the food chain.

Off late, several countries have come up with their versions of eco-friendly paints to reduce the levels of toxicity released into the environment. And recently, India has also joined this club with the introduction of Khadi Prakritik paint.

What is Khadi Prakritik Paint?

The Union Minister for Road and Trasport and Highways and MSME Nitin Gadkari recently announced the launch of an innovative new paint developed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission on the 12th of January 2021.

This Indian version of Eco-friendly paint called “Khadi Prakritik Paint” is a first of its kind product with antifungal and antibacterial properties.

With cow dung as one of its main ingredients, this paint is free from heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, etc.

The Khadi Prakritik Paint will be available in two forms- distemper paint and plastic emulsion paint.

A Source of Revenue For the Farmers

As mentioned previously, cow dung is one of its main components. It will not only provide the farmers with an extra source of income but also boost local manufacturing and create sustainable local employment through the transfer of technology. It is estimated that the production of Khadi Prakritik paint has the potential to generate an additional income of approximately Rs. 30,000 per annum per animal to farmers and gaushalas.

The First commercially available Eco-friendly Paint in India

In 2019, one of India’s leading paint brands, Asian Paints, launched its eco-friendly paints called the Nilaya Naturals. The main components of this paint include soya bean, whey protein, and casein along with castor seeds, calcium carbonate, neem oil, and pigments, like yellow oxide.
