“Climate change is the greatest threat to our existence in our short history on this planet. Nobody’s going to buy their way out of its effects.”

Have you ever wished that you could control the weather; that you could bring rain or snow whenever you felt like it? What if I were to tell you that this is possible? Can you imagine that? Being in control of the weather would be such an amazing experience, wouldn’t it? This is where Cloud seeding comes into play. Cloud seeding is the process of spraying a cloud with a substance such as silver iodide, dry ice, salt, or liquid propane that causes crystal growth in the water droplets. These droplets become larger and heavier so they fall faster than those without the seeding material. This causes clouds to produce rain sooner than naturally.

During the process of condensation, water particles become too large to be suspended. If they do not fall back to the surface within a short time, this is called “freezing out”. The droplets become too heavy to remain in the troposphere layer. They begin to rain out of the cloud and fall onto the Earth’s surface. Seeding clouds can cause rain as well as snow by causing the release of latent heat by condensation. A cloud in the process of converting water into ice would become colder than ambient air. This cold is released as heat when the water or ice changes phase from liquid form to vapor form. The vapor can rise due to osmosis and form condensation trails in the upper atmosphere which are buoyant, resulting in precipitation on Earth’s surface.

Cloud seeding can be carried out in a number of different ways. One of the most common methods is the release of silver iodide, dry ice, or salt into the weather system. These substances are lifted by thermals and carried to altitudes where they are precipitated as droplets by latent heat released when water vapor condenses around them.
Another method involves burning various materials such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), kerosene jet fuel, and ammonium perchlorate. These substances provide a low concentration of particles that are capable of attracting additional moisture and providing nucleation sites for precipitation.

Cloud Seeding provides a lot of benefits for us. It is an efficient method to enhance winter snowfall in many places around the world and it can even bring about rain when there is a water scarcity. Despite the feeble results in most countries, in many areas, seeding has been a very reliable source of rainfall and snowfall thereby controlling the climate in those areas.
Cloud seeding may seem like the perfect solution to do away with our climate change and global warming problems but most of us fail to notice the negative impacts it has on our environment and on our health. The salts and other compounds that are used for cloud seeding have been proven to harm our health. Silver iodide was shown to cause temporary incapacitation and even residual injury to humans and other mammals if there was continuous, chronic exposure.

The increased amounts of silver compounds that reach the Earth’s surface can be dangerous for small animals and it has cause massive algal blooms in the once clear waters of some national parks around the world. In some places, heavy rainfall caused by cloud seeding caused many road accidents. Too much precipitation can also have an adverse effect on our use of solar power for a better environment.

The effects of cloud seeding also greatly depend on who controls it. It can cause social disruptions and conflicts among some countries. Some people may even consider using it as a weapon of destruction. These clouds can also act as an obstruction for aircrafts and may cause a lot of problems for those travelling from place to place. This process is also not very easy to control. The only part of cloud seeding that is in our control is our desire to do it.
But do we really have the right to play God? This is a very common question that may arise considering the many effects of this process. It is not our job to decide when to bring about rainfall or snowfall. By doing so, we are disrupting the natural balance of the environment. Depositing silver particles all over the surface of the earth is also not helping our case. If we want to control the weather around us, we must make a few changes to the way we live and start practicing those things which can help protect our environment.

Bringing about rain and snow may reduce one problem but it still causes the rise of another one. If we want to live in a better world, we must start by giving back. Planting many trees is more than enough to bring about the rain we are supposed to receive. We can also control the industry and factory emissions and start using green modes of transport. Recycling is one of the best examples of controlling pollution rise.
Cloud seeding has been used for decades as an attempt to control storms by generating artificial precipitation from them; this is known as weather modification or storm enhancement. However, it is not usually considered reliable and can lead to localized flooding in some cases. Critics argue that cloud seeding is a method that is too inefficient, expensive, and environmentally irresponsible for deliberate use. Instead of trying to bring about rain and snow fall by artificial means, we have to try to change the weather conditions naturally without interfering in these processes.
