Human intelligence is marvelously complex. In the modern era, researchers have relied on IQ (intelligence quotient) tests to measure both, what people know and how quickly they can solve problems using reasoning.

But IQ tests alone don’t necessarily account for the full range of thinking abilities. IQ tests don’t always predict and be the sole criteria of success in personal life or professional life also.

IQ refers to intellectual ability. Some of the common elements are the ability to “use logic to solve problems”, “plan and strategize“, “understand abstract ideas“, “learn and adapt to change and grasp and use of language for communication”.

The unexplored and unfathomable rich sea of emotions that makes the inner life and relationship so complex, so compelling and so often so puzzling, plays a vital role in our interpersonal relationships, which are so very important in every facet of life.

Emotions are physiological responses to any situation. And emotions also play a very vital and significant role in our lives. In a world of constant disruption and change driven by technology and innovation, it is only EQ (emotional quotient) or EI (emotional intelligence) that truly stands out to differentiate us from our human and mechanical counterparts.

Our humanity is most visibly and emphatically evident in our feelings. As per a report, in today’s world, EQ scores are on the decline across the world. Many experts have attributed this to stress, increased anxiety, addiction to remaining digitally connected, over-dependence on information on social media, and an environment where life is not possible without technology. Feelings or emotions introduce us to ourselves, whereas technology takes us away from ourselves. 

Can emotions be brought into the domain of intelligence? Generally, emotions and intelligence are seen in inherent contradictory terms. Personal intelligence makes both intuitive and common sense. Recognizing a feeling as it happens is the keystone of intelligence.

People with greater certainty of their feelings are better equipped to handle the situation. Handling feelings is an ability that builds on self-awareness and can soothe oneself. It also helps to shake off rampant anxiety, gloom, irritation, agitation, and the consequences of failures.

People who are poor in this ability are constantly battling the feeling of distress and depression, while those who excel in it, can bounce back far more quickly from life’s setbacks.

Emotional intelligence forms the juncture at which cognition and emotion meet. It’s an integral part of forming and developing meaningful human relationships. It has been observed through various studies that there’s a significant link between high EI and more successful interpersonal relationships.

Those who exhibited higher levels of EI also showed a greater propensity for empathic perspective in exchanging cooperation with others. It also helps in developing the ability to manage emotions and stress, the ability to solve personal as well as interpersonal problems, chronic stress, and the prolonged negative effects of emotions, (which are always accompanied and followed by anger, irritation, agitation, frustration, and depression). 

People who are depressed and resigned to despair, accept their laissez-faire attitude by doing nothing to change their distress despite knowing clearly about their mood and reactive behavior. Some people lack words for their feelings. It seems to be as if they lack feelings also.

It may be, because of their inability to express their feelings, rather than from an absence of emotion altogether. Their emotional flatness exemplifies what psychiatrists call ALEXITHYMIA. In this, the person is unable to put into words precisely what his feelings are. Feelings come to them but as a befuddling bundle of distress. 

The value of EI is immense. Developing emotional intelligence encourages many positive traits, from resilience to communication, motivation to stress management. It facilitates our capacity for resilience, motivation, empathy, reasoning, stress management, effective communication, and our ability to read and navigate a plethora of social skills and conflicts.

People who are high in emotional intelligence are socially poised, outgoing, and cheerful. They are not prone to fearfulness or worried rumination. They have a notable capacity for commitment to people and causes, for taking responsibility, and for having an ethical outlook.

They are sympathetic and caring in their relationships. Their emotional life is rich but appropriate. They are more comfortable with themselves, others, and the social universe they live in.  

In the nutshell, those with higher levels of EI also displayed greater resilience and are less likely to burn out or succumb to depression. Resilience has an underlying perseverance component that motivates endurance in the face of obstacles.

Optimistic people see a failure as due to something that can be changed so that they can succeed next time, while pessimists take the blew for the failure, ascribing it to some characteristic and become helpless.

Empathetic people are more attuned to the subtle social signals that indicate what others need or want. These are the abilities that undergird popularity, leadership, and interpersonal relationship effectiveness. Intelligence has many factors.

Some of which are connected to our ability to reason and others to our ability to feel emotions. Understanding and developing both Kinds of intelligence is the key to success in life. It unfolds a way of life by living which we can grow to be socially more productive, individually more balanced, and tranquil.

Without this inward balance and readiness to act well in the world outside, nobody can ever successfully face his problems in life. IQ (intelligence quotient) and EQ (emotional quotient) are not opposing competencies, they are separate but complementary to each other.
