Experts are warned: Earth’s magnetic pole is changing because of “something” at the core 1

It seems like many things about the nature and attributes of the Earth are changing. If it is not continents drifting apart due to tectonic plates, it is the Earth’s magnetic pole that is changing. The Earth’s magnetic pole has been on an interesting journey. Known to be positioned in the Canadian Arctic for years now, it is shifting towards Siberia and scientists say even towards Russia, and this makes researchers question a lot about this movement.

The drifting of Earth’s magnetic north pole is totally normal and for years this has been transpiring slowly. However, what has been a concern or caught the attention of experts and scientists is the speed and/or pace at which the magnetic north pole is moving. What is making it move so fast and why is it headed to Siberia? Maybe it does not seem like something to be concerned about, but I bet there is something to discover regarding this.

From a constant pace to unprecedented speeds: The accelerated drift

When we talk about the geographical description of the North Pole, we are talking about the lines that are curved from the top to the bottom of the globe and it is located in the northern hemisphere of the earth in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. Because it is in constant movement, it is hard to provide a fixed identification; however, geographically, the north pole is fixed.

When we study the earth, based on the findings made by experts and geologists, the north pole has been in a continuous shift, but at a reasonably slow pace, moving at about six miles per year, according to The Times, and this pace is before the 1990s because it was then that it started accelerating at about 34 miles per year in the early 2000s, and because of that, the north pole got closer to Siberia than it was 5 years ago.

The constant pace to unprecedented speed is not entirely a good thing because it has various ramifications. When it comes to military and civilian navigations, GPS navigation tools, animal migration and more, they are affected in a way that it distorts the accuracy of locations and it has to be updated more often. Fortunately, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has updated the World Magnetic Model to improve accuracy.

Experts and geologists are worried

In a report by Smithsonian Magazine, researchers have expressed their worry and concern. William Brown, a global geomagnetic field modeller at the British Geological Survey, expressed in a statement that the magnetic north movement and behaviour is something they have never deciphered before, and since James Clark Ross discovered it in 1831, the shift was gradual and not accelerated like it is now. It makes me wonder, is that why time is moving fast too?

Core dynamics: Deciphering the Earth’s mechanisms of the magnetic transition

The earth’s magnetic field is made up of molten iron and another element called geodynamo, which then creates the magnetic field within the earth’s outer core. Therefore, this movement can be affected by the change in how the molten core is flowing. Reports state that a “tug-of-war” between Siberia and Canada magnets is what is causing this rapid movement. The Canadian magnetic lobe is now weaker compared to the one in Siberia; hence the movement towards that direction.

There is also a polar shift related to the drift of the magnetic pole and how it affects the migration of animals. According to CNN, animals are dependent on the magnetic pole to find their way to their migration locations; because of this shit, animals such as whales, butterflies, sea turtles and many species of migratory birds are affected. This can affect communication and disrupt their instincts too as they try to move.
