“Our Universe is a sea of energy- free, clean energy. It is all out there waiting for us to set sail upon it.”

Have you ever wondered about the significance of the color green? It can mean anything from greed and jealousy to money. Here, we are more concerned with the ‘life’ part of the green color. It symbolizes nature and energy with a focus on harmony, fertility, freshness, and growth. With the world on the edge of collapse, green is what everyone is looking to. Green stands for purity, nature, and rebirth. It’s no wonder that people want to start using greener substances. It gives them a sense of hope for the future.

We know that green symbolizes nature among other things. So green energy is basically ‘energy derived from nature’. Anything from sunlight to water to wind can be used as a source of green energy. One of the main advantages of green energy is that it is safe to use, and it doesn’t harm the environment in any way. These energy sources will always remain on Earth, so there is no chance of running out. This is why we call them renewable sources of energy.
The types of green energy are Solar energy, Wind energy, Hydroelectricity, Biogas, and biomass.
Solar energy
The most common and infamous type of green energy is solar energy. It means energy from the sun. Stars, like the sun, produce a large amount of energy during nuclear fusion. During fusion, an unimaginable amount of energy is emitted from these stars. This energy reaches us in the form of solar radiation. Using photovoltaic cells, we can convert this radiation into useful energy or electricity. The current produced in these cells is passed through an inverter which converts this current into alternating current, which can then be used to power your homes or any buildings.

Solar energy is now getting more common because of its affordability and its efficiency. On a large scale, it can even be used to power up entire neighborhoods.

Wind energy
Where does wind come from? How does it occur? Have you ever thought about that? The wind is brought about by uneven heating up of the atmosphere by the sun. This uneven heating, along with the Earth’s spin and its orbit around the sun, causes the air to move. In some areas, the wind is extremely strong. These areas are converted into wind farms, which have almost a hundred windmills built a few meters away from each other. Wind forces the blades of these windmills to rotate, which turns an internal rotor. This rotor spins a generator which in turn produces electricity.

Even though the wind seems to be very strong in these areas, a large number of windmills are still necessary to produce the required amount of electricity. Areas in high altitudes or near seas and oceans are the best places to have a wind farm, because of the change in pressure in these areas.

Hydroelectricity
We have all seen dams and reservoirs. They are built in a high place to store gravitational potential energy. This stored water is let out through small openings in order to increase its energy per square meter. When this water falls down with so much pressure, it has enough power to rotate a turbine which is kept below the damn. This turbine rotates and activates a generator, thereby producing electricity.

Biogas
What if I were to tell you that there is an efficient way to get rid of your kitchen waste and power your house and even your car at the same time. Doesn’t that sound pretty amazing? The organic waste from our kitchens is placed in a container without providing an oxygen supply. On fermentation of these wastes, gases like methane and carbon dioxide are produced, which can power up homes and even act as fuel for our cars. The wastes that are left in the container can be used as safe, toxin-free fertilizers for our gardens as well.

Biomass
Like biogas, biomass is also derived from plants and animals. Plants can store energy from the sun, which when extracted properly, can produce energy. Biomass is usually produced from sugars or cellulite. It can also be produced by burning wood in furnaces or converting them to biofuels like ethanol and biodiesels.

The main advantage of going green is that we are saving our planet one step at a time. By using the already available resources from nature, there is no way in which we are harming the Earth. These energy sources don’t produce any harmful gases, they are affordable, and they can promise a better future for our planet. We have to start using these natural forms of energy in order to make a difference.
Change is not that easy, especially when you have been stuck to a routine for a very long time. You might have noticed that the older generation prefers to use conventional, non-renewable types of energy, even though we are running out. We can’t really blame them because it is not easy to suddenly accept change overnight. We could spread awareness and make them understand the harm these conventional energy sources cause to the environment, and how we don’t even have enough of it left.

Green energy sources are our future. There is no running away from it. We are given the option to go green. We just have to take responsibility and start changing the future; else there won’t be a future to change. The Earth doesn’t belong to us. We belong to the Earth. We should make the most of the resources provided for us by the Earth if we want to live our best life and give the best lives for our future generations to come.
