“Animals are such agreeable friends—they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.”
–George Eliot
Animals play many important roles in all our lives daily. If you have a pet then you will understand just how much they do for you. Be it a fish, bird, dog, cat, hamster, you know how important they are to you. Animals will never leave you with the feeling that you are alone. They are always there for you. They even help treat anxiety and depression.
Animals even play an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Without pollinators, you can forget about the beautiful flowers that you see around you. They help in transportation and also work as healthcare companions. Animals are very smart and once you teach them a few tricks, they will definitely surprise you.

But enough about the day-to-day lives of our furry, scaly, and feathery friends. Let’s get down to the big news among animals. What have animals done that is so magnificent that they made headlines? Let’s find out!
There are many animals that have left their mark on planet earth and on mankind. Some of the animals who went out of their way and out of this world (literally) are mentioned below:
- Laika- She was a regular stray dog, roaming the streets of Moscow, nothing special about her until one day when she was chosen to go to space. November 3rd, 1957, she was the first living creature to be sent into space onboard the second Sputnik made by the Soviet Union. Scientists placed several devices on Laika to monitor her breathing, blood pressure, and pulse to find out how the journey would affect her. Sadly, she never made it back alive and scientists found the cause of death to be hyperthermia due to the heating up of the cabin when it entered outer space. Laika went down in history to be the first-ever living being to enter space and paved the way for humans to travel into space.

- Dolly- Dolly was a sheep and nothing seems that special about her until you find out that she wasn’t exactly born like normal sheep. She was created by scientists, or the more relevant term would be she was cloned. She was created on 5th July 1996 in Scotland when scientists made a breakthrough in the world of cloning. Even though cloning was possible way before Dolly was born, it could only be done in the embryonic stage, and cloning an adult mammal was thought not possible till Dolly arrived. She was under considerable surveillance and was even able to mate, producing her own offspring. Dolly aged prematurely and she had to be put down at six and a half years old due to sheep lung adenomatosis. Scientists believe it was because she was cloned from a six-year-old sheep.

- Cher Ami- As we know, many pigeons were used as messengers during World War II and one among them was Cher Ami. She warned the American Battalion about any dangers that they may have been facing during the war. Even though heavily wounded, she still managed to deliver 12 cards to the battalion and the last message was removed from his amputated leg, carrying a warning about the enemy’s position. Because of her brave act, she was able to save the lives of 194 men and she died a hero.

- Chita- Do you have a favorite film star? Chita the chimpanzee was famous for his role in the Tarzan movies and he also made it into the Guinness book of world records for being the world’s oldest chimp. He died at 80 years old after a period of fame as a movie star in his 30s and 40s. He was shown many displays of affection at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary animal shelter when he passed away.

- Cairo- You might remember the famous al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. Cairo was a dog working for the US Navy SEALs and he helped track down Bin Laden and put an end to him. He was being searched for masterminding all the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Cairo used his instincts and strong senses to track down Bin Laden and thanks to him, the Navy SEALs were able to find him and raid his hideout.

Like these many famous animals, there are more and more who go down in history every day. Though we don’t hear about all the wonderful acts that animals have performed changing the course of history, we know that they are out there and they are smart. The most recent famous animal would probably be the bat that caused corona. That creature certainly changed the course of history for the whole world. None of us saw it coming.
“We patronize the animals for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they are more finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other Nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.” ― Henry Beston
