In collaboration with the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) in Bengaluru, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has opened the country’s first food museum in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

The museum exhibits the history of farming and food storage in India and throughout the world. It also honours FCI’s contribution to India’s food grain production and distribution. Why Thanjavur?

FCI was founded in Thanjavur, where its first office opened on January 14, 1965. The museum depicts man’s progress from nomadic hunter tribes to sedentary agriculture practises, eventually culminating in the birth of civilization. It also depicts a variety of ancient grain storage technologies, both global and indigenous, as well as storage, storage, and food grain production situations from across the world and in India.

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu’s cultural hub, will now be displaying India’s agricultural past. Everyone on the planet is talking about food security, and everyone understands how critical it is.

During previous pandemics, more people died from starvation than from the pandemic itself. You (FCI staff) were able to offer enough food grains to every single inhabitant of India because of the efforts of our farmers. From food security to farmer security, and from farmer security to consumer security, we’ve come a long way. As a result, the world now regards India as a reliable partner.

What to expect?

The museum tries to accomplish so by showing the history of farming and food grains through exhibitions that combine technology with narrative, 3D models, and genuine seeds and grains from around India. A section discusses the origins and domestication of numerous crops, emphasising the fact that what we eat is a product of a global system. A projection map depicts the history of farming as well as how people store grains throughout the world, while another area focuses on pests that threaten crops in the field and in bulk storage.

A virtual reality display and panels depict FCI’s history and the path from famine to food security through traditional and modern food storage technologies. The full journey of rice from seed to plate is depicted in a big tableau. Finally, individuals who want to put their newfound knowledge to the test can take a good test.

The museum provides insight into where our basic foods originate from and what we consume as a country, and it’s an intriguing addition to the country’s collection of large and small museums.
