Internet – Human Mind Will be Reduced to Only A Decision Making Machine 1

The most critical inventions are not those that resemble inventions, but those which appear innate and natural. The most important inventions were not the capture of fire, the printing press, the discovery of electricity, exploring space, or the mapping of GENOME. The most important invention was expression and “TALKING”. A new invention has emerged, a code for the collective conscious which requires a new way of thinking.

The collective externalized mind is the mind we all share. The INTERNET is the infinite oscillation of our collective conscious interacting with itself. It’s not about computers. It’s also not about what it means to be human. It’s about collective thinking. We are talking. It’s not what you know, it’s what you can find out.

Reality is a man-made process. The images of our world, or this universe and of ourselves are, in part, models resulting out of our perceptions only. It helps in generating the technologies. We create tools and then mold ourselves in their images. The worldview is in fact, a pattern of order of resonances, in which the mind is a subsystem of larger order. Mind is intrinsic to the messages carried by the pathways Within the larger system and intrinsic also in the pathways themselves.

JCR Licklider, who had published “Man-Computer Symbiosis” in 1960, described the idea of “Intergalactic Computer Network” in 1961. He was hired as a director of the newly constituted “Information Processing Techniques Office” IPTO at the Pentagon Advanced Research Project Agency. Licklider designed the foundation for the global computer network. He along with his associates provided the idea that led to the development of the ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency) forerunner of the Internet.

In September 1966, an article was published in “Scientific American” about project MAC (Mathematics And Computation). This project was an MIT-based cooperative enterprise in pioneering computer science. It included the circle of AI (artificial intelligence) innovators surrounding Marvin Minsky. Mainframe computers were the only facility, which was available in those days. Thirty people, simultaneously from all around the MIT campus could simultaneously log into the same complex. They could simultaneously communicate with the machine and with each other. Today, there is a sea change. Anybody with a cheap laptop with an average WiFi can enjoy the illusion of the digital world.

The advent of the Internet age happened progressively. We saw it happening and then growing like a child, born of many brains. It’s like a protean animal, whose characteristics were unknown. After the birth of this creature, it has grown exponentially and its limbs are still growing. Now the creature has become autonomous, and the most important part of our universe. Today, we are almost if not completely, dependent on this creature. Some of us are addicted to this magical tool. Everything from information to communication, knowledge to entertainment, business to governance, has not only got synchronized, rather merged into it. But it is also a fact that connectivity comes at the cost of privacy.

The web is a work of genius. It’s one of the highest achievements of the human species. Its most remarkable quality is that it is not constructed by one individual genius. It’s constructed by an anarchistic confederation of largely anonymous units located at different and distant places, spread over the world. Or we can say, it is project MAC at large, superhumanly large. It has a distributed network of computers of different sizes, speeds, and manufacturers. It’s a network, that nobody ever designed or put together. Rather it grew haphazardly and organically in a way, that is not just biological, but ecological.

How the Internet is affecting our lives, let’s try to evaluate. The Internet and the World Wide Web that runs on it have struck our species informational ecology with an explosive impact. The shockwaves of it are rippling through our cultural, social, economical, technological, scientific, and cognitive landscapes. We are entering the age of Quantum Information. Information is becoming more and more important in our society. Information is the truth value of a proposition.

We have also seen that short and precise is becoming the most important part of our lives. Short mails will have relevance because people don’t want to read beyond a few lines. They will contain only a single issue. Because the second or third issue will be lost. The reality is that the functioning of our brains will significantly be reduced in the coming years, only  into a “DECISION-MAKING MACHINE”
