Transition – The Law of Nature 1

In the last one year, the human race has seen so much turmoil that cannot be forgotten easily in the near future. COVID 19 has created a situation, which we have not seenin the century. If it continues to progress at this rate, the impacts will be even more devastating. Extreme weather has been bringing destruction to different parts of the world in recent times. What’s the law of nature? CHANGE, CREATION, and DESTRUCTION are happening simultaneously. Everything is in transition. Whatever comes, has to go. By neglecting the precious gifts bestowed upon us by nature, we have been accelerating the inevitable self-destruction.

Ecosystems are the very basis of life. Let’s try to understand what an Ecosystem is. Ecosystems are composed of a variety of abiotic and biotic components. Some of the components are SOIL, ATMOSPHERE, RADIATION from the SUN, WATER, and LIVING ORGANISMS. Living organisms interact with every other element in the local environment. Within the ecosystem, species are connected and dependent upon one another in the food chain. They exchange energy and matter between themselves as well as with their environment. Some of the important ecosystems are AGRO, AQUATIC, CORAL REEF, DESERTS, FOREST, HUMUS, MICROBIAL, and LARGE MARINE.

We have seen awesome rivers free-flowing on almost every part of this earth. In the same way, cumulatively trees create many giant rivers flowing from land to air. Every tree on this earth is no less than a fountain of water merging into that river which is flowing from Earth to air. Just imagine how a single large tree transpires up to 40000 gallons or 151000 liters of water in a year. Every tree sucks water from the groundthrough its roots and releases it in the atmosphere through thousands of pores per inch (botanically called STOMATA) in the leaves. Transpiration of trees accounts for 10 % of the moisture in the atmosphere.

Now not only water but soil and air are also deeply polluted. This pollution in many forms is transmitted via plant and animal to man. The outcome is the series of invasion of viruses in the last decades. There is no clean soil or water left. Toxins are all in the food, air, and water. Excessive use of chemicals in everyday life has played havoc with the ecosystem.

The ozone layer of the earth’s atmosphere plays a crucial role in depleting the amount of (UV) ultraviolet radiation that reaches the surface. If it reaches directly on Earth, it will affect all forms of life, because DNA is readily and directly damaged by ultraviolet light. The ozone layer serves to protect life on Earth. Life is being protected and nurtured by a complex system constructed by all these ecosystems. A slight change in any of the ecosystems triggers an imbalance affecting all the forms of life on Earth.

Let all ofus must become the responsible trustee of this earth, and not a reckless enjoyer risking collective well-being. This can only be accomplished by meditating on a higher purpose in human life. We need to realize our real identity, our relationship with NATURE, and our duties towards other living beings.
