Common Pollutants: First major reasons for air challenges

In 1971 EPA took a step in environmental production by establishing national air quality standards. Today great progress can be seen in achieving it. Its periodic assessment makes the reporting of air quality easier. Visible air pollution in the environment is less than in 1970. This is the major sign of progress.

But we can not ignore the hazardous air pollution if it is not visible. Few scientific studies have shown the harmful impact of very low-level pollutants. These pollutants are harming public health and welfare. The revision of five common pollutants is subject to national quality standards. EPA took the decision to make the standards more protective. The reason behind this significant change is scientific studies. They show that existing standards were not adequate to protect public health and the environment.

Common pollutant: Status

In many areas of the United States national air quality standards are not met. At least one of the six common pollutants is exceeding the quality. We can appreciate the fact that levels of particle pollution and ground-level ozone pollution are low. But still, the level is unhealthy in many areas of the country. These pollutants are the outcomes of emissions. They are from diverse sources which travel long distances and across state lines.

Fine particle pollution is the fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Scientific results show the impact of fine particles in long- and short-term exposures. It is a severe reason for premature death. Harmful effects on the cardiovascular system are also caused by it. It also includes increased hospital admissions needs. As people may need emergency department visits for heart attacks and strokes. Harmful respiratory effects, including asthma attacks, are diseases showing their impact.

Problems caused by the increase in Ozone

An increase in ozone can create many problems. Some of them are:

  • More pollution in the environment is the main reason for the increase in the frequency of asthma attacks.
  • Many people can face difficulty in breathing. It can cause shortness of breath.
  • It can also cause aggravation of lung diseases.
  • It might cause permanent damage to the lungs through long-term exposure.
  • Risk of hospitalization increases.
  • The need for emergency room visits increases.
  • People suffer from premature death.

The emission of fine particles can happen directly in the environment. They may also be formed from gaseous emissions which include sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides. Ozone is a colorless gas. Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react to form this hazardous substance.

Climate Change: Second major reasons for air challenges

In 2009 EPA determined the harmful impact of climate change on the environment. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere in hazardous form. This becomes the reason for causing climate change and ocean acidification. They endanger the health and welfare of current and future generations. Long-lived greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases are some of the components. Diverse human activities are the reasons for these gases.

The operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences has a lot to say about climate change. In May 2010, The National Research Council published an assessment concluding human activities are the reason for climate change. It also stated that it poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems. They stated that this conclusion is on the basis of consistent findings.

What impacts climate change have on public health and welfare?

There are huge risks to public health and the environment. This is from climate change which is substantial and far-reaching. Scientists suspect that carbon pollution and resulting climate change might cause serious issues. It may lead to the following problems:

  • Climate change causes natural disasters such as hurricanes and storms.
  • Flooding due to increasing heat is a rising problem.
  • In the area of barren land chances of drought increase.
  • More severe wildfires can be seen in the environment.
  • It results in death-causing events.
  • It may cause minor as well as severe injuries.
  • Due to climate change and natural disasters, billions of dollars of damage happens to property.
  • Huge damage is done to the nation’s infrastructure and a lot of resources are destroyed.
  • It increased the chance for more frequent and intense heat waves.
  • Reports have shown increased mortality, especially among the poor and elderly.
  • Anticipated increases in ground-level ozone pollution are causing loss to natural resources.
  • It has the potential for the enhanced spread of some waterborne diseases.
  • Pest-related diseases are also caused by rising temperature and climate change.
  • It increases the production of dispersion of airborne allergens which has severe and harmful impacts.
  • A major cause for ocean acidification.
  • Cause for flooding as sea level rises which causes loss of human life.
  • It increases storm surge.
  • Farmers suffer because of harm to agriculture and forests.
  • Many species have gone extinct and it does damage to the ecosystem.
  • Food scarcity and its wastage is the rising problem in the world.
  • A lot of conflicts or mass migration are taking place.
  • It may exacerbate problems that raise humanitarian problems.
  • It increases the trade and national security issues for the United States.
