In the midst of a truly historic pandemic, one major event may temporarily lift our spirits – the unprecedented migration of millions of monarch butterflies through the heart of North Carolina.
Record numbers of them recently hatched over the winter in Mexico and they are now migrating back up north for the summer.
Experts now estimate that over 300 million butterflies will descend on North Carolina over the next couple weeks.
According to a new interactive map, published by the U.S. Forest Service, the best times to see them in North Carolina will be from May through July.
