“The global Corona conflict has rammed people into trenches. Invisible, lethal, viral weapons have replaced visible whistling bullets and thunderous bombs. As we don’t know who is calling the shots, it is difficult to tell how we can call a truce with imperceptible enemies.”

The dawn of the year 2020 also brought along with it a global pandemic, Covid-19, which is caused by the coronavirus. Even though this deadly virus spread to most parts of the world in the early months of 2020, it started off in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The coronavirus is said to have started off in a bat but since the Wuhan marketplace was not selling bats, the suspicion was turned towards scaly anteaters. Since then, the virus kept attaching itself to many people, making them sick, even killing many of them, and spreading to different hosts, continuing the cycle.

The symptoms of a lot of Covid-19 patients were not similar at all. Some had a fever, throat pain, diarrhea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or other such noticeable symptoms, while there were many who did not even show a single symptom, were diagnosed with the virus. This was a cause of concern for the authorities because if people don’t show signs of having the illness, they can spread the virus without even being aware of it. So, a worldwide lockdown was put into force in March 2020, to make sure that people did not go outside unnecessarily. People were allowed to go out to buy essentials during the day day-time, but they had t reach their homes in time for the curfew. Those who were seen to be out for no reason were heavily fined.

It is now 2021; the second wave of Covid-19 has hit us harder than ever. There are many mutations of the coronavirus which seem to be more deadly than its predecessors. More and more people are dying all over the world, so another lockdown was put into effect with a curfew, while the vaccine is being provided to different age groups all over the world.

We are made to sit at home all day watching our online classes or working from home. Sitting down in front of our laptops from morning till evening does no help our physical or mental fitness. If we were still going to schools, colleges, or to our offices, we would actually have a reason to get out of bed and get out of the house. In our schools, we would sit and listen to our teacher without staring into a screen and go play with our friends or walk around the campus during the breaks. Most of the students don’t even wake up in time for online classes. They enter the respective meetings and go back to sleep.

No one is getting any exercise. This is not healthy for our bodies. It’s the same routine every day where we wake up, eat, and sleep. The weekdays are like weekends now. The two days we used to cherish when we had work or schools have become the new normal now. We have to keep our bodies and minds fit during this pandemic.

It is hard for us to leave the house and go to the gym, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t do small and simple work-outs or exercises right here in our homes. It is a bit risky to try out hard exercises without a physical trainer around, so we can just do normal stretches or walk around the house. Sitting in front of a screen or sleeping for hours on end is not going to do us any favors. We must keep our bodies fit and eat healthy food instead of hoarding junk food.

It is not enough to keep just our body fit. Mental health is also a growing concern during this pandemic. Remember when we were always surrounded by friends at school or at work. Always in each others’ company even though it’s a place to study or a place of work, we had comfort in knowing that our friends are right there with us. Suddenly it was all taken away. Now the students even yearn to see the scariest teacher they had in school. Many young students haven’t even been to a school yet. Their first lesson was taught in their homes through a screen.

This takes away something in people. Many students, teenagers especially, were found to suffer from depression and anxiety since the onset of the pandemic. It’s not that spending time with families is making them depressed, but seeing the same faces and doing the same boring routine for days on end can make you go crazy. Many people are having mental breakdowns because of this and a lot have lost the will to live.

We must try to be there for our friends. Even though it is just as hard for us, we should all try to help each other. This pandemic has made all of our lives very hard and adapting to the new normal is going to take a very long time. We all need as much help and support as we can get. Talk to your friends through the phone, set up meetings, and use those social media skills that you have all acquired throughout the years. Be there for those who you think are suffering. Provide help for those who have lost family members to the deadly coronavirus.

This is not a long holiday from school or work. All of our lives and routines are changing. This is the new normal and we need to make the most of it. So, don’t disregard your physical or mental fitness. During these times, they are the only things that can keep us sane. There is still hope for things to go back to the way they were, but that is not going to happen for a very long time, so we just have to make use of what we have and be safe and healthy.
