Australia
Australia may be known as a summer destination for its beaches and open deserts, but winters (June-August) bring a whole range of activities to several parts of the continent. Swim among migrating whale sharks in the Ningaloo Reef and walk up scenic trails in the Blue Mountains. It’s a great time to take a road trip to Australia’s deserts and outbacks, where the weather will be pleasant enough for drives. Visit the sacred monolith of Uluru in the desert and head north to the city of Darwin for its national parks and outdoor markets.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s winter chill makes for great weather to soak in one of the country’s many hot springs. Pick from the Kerosene Creek in Rotorua, Hanmer Springs in Canterbury and the hot pools in Taupo, among others. It’s also a great time to go skiing or snowboarding at Mt. Ruapehu in the North Island and go whale-watching in Kaikoura.

South Africa
June, July and August are winter months in South Africa. The days are pleasant and sunny, and as the sun sets, a mild chill sets in. Every winter, whales make their way to Walker Bay in Hermanus, and you can catch sight of them from the shores or take a boat out for a dive. You can even catch the Sardine Run—the annual migration of thousands of sardines from South Africa’s west coast to east coast. Before you leave, make sure to take a winter safari at one of the many game reserves and parks here—the dry weather draws animals out to watering holes, and the thinned bushes make it easier to spot them.
Madagascar
The best time to visit Madagascar is between April and October, when the temperatures drop and rainfall reduces. In August, go whale-watching in Ile Sainte Marie, and in September, enjoy discovering new birds in Masoala National Park. June and July are great times to spot baby lemurs in Berenty Reserve and Isalo National Park.
Bolivia
Bolivia’s winter (May to October) signals the beginning of hiking season. So gear up for adventurous treks up the Takesi trail and El Choro trails near La Paz. August is the driest month, and also the most crowded. Take a cable car ride for aerial views of La Paz, enjoy horseback tours through the Cañon del Inca in Tupiza and at night, hit the clubs in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
