Tony Blair the ex-Prime Minister of Britain once said that his top priority will be education to make Britain a learning society. He further said, “School children ought to learn the joy of life, exhilaration of music, excitement of sports, the beauty of art and the magic of science”. Education is very important in society. It’s the basis for the prolongation of cultures, for the instruction of the individuals, for the evolution of society, and for all other purposes. Any education is in its forms and means, an outgrowth of the needs of society. We must remember that intelligence is not enough, intelligence plus the character, that must be the goal of the education said Martin Luther King Jr.

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. It includes teaching, training, learning, discussions, and directed research. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy. Education is a gradual process that brings positive changes in human life and behaviour. Education brings a natural and lasting change in an individual’s reasoning and ability to achieve the targeted goal. It facilitates us to investigate our considerations and thoughts and makes it ready to express it in various shapes. We can also say “Education is the passage to progress”. Two principles characterize most attempts to define quality in education. The first identifies the learner’s cognitive development and the second is emphasizing education’s role in promoting values and attitudes of responsible citizenship and in nurturing creative and emotional development.

Indian education focuses more on theory rather than practical. The Indian system does not allow creativity. In India, education is a part of a routine process. Every parent wants his child to get a degree in engineering or medical stream, whether he learns something or not. In Indian society, the education system only emphasizes studies and there’s very little room for extracurricular activities. In India, students take admission into streams which gives them the opportunity for higher pay scales or a higher number of jobs and not for creativity or job satisfaction. In short, in India, we go with the flow and not with the field of interest. We are made to believe in grades and certificates and make no efforts in building capabilities and upscaling of capacities.

Whereas in foreign countries they focus more on a practice-based approach in learning and also allow creativity in the education process. Their education system contains various curriculum taking from sports to arts, academia to cultural education, along with studies. The United States has arts, sports, music, and theatre in the syllabus and Australia focuses more on sports. They have cricket, hockey and boxing, and other sports in their college curriculum. In Dubai primary and secondary education is free and it is made compulsory in law. Whereas in India education is a big business.

According to UNESCO higher education is no longer a luxury. It is essential to national, social, and economic development. The quest to achieve Education to All (ETA) is fundamentally about assuring that children, youth, and adults gain the knowledge and skills they need to better their lives and also play a role in building more peaceful and equitable societies.  India’s youth can be an asset only if there’s an investment in building their capabilities. A knowledge-driven generation will be an asset. Denied this investment, it will become a social and economic liability. Hence there must be an investment in building the knowledge base for the coming generation, said Dr. Manmohan Singh the ex-Prime Minister of India.

We have progressed with time; however, we still have not been able to move away from rot learning. Indian education system suffers from so many drawbacks. But despite the limitations, education has become one of the influential instruments of social change. It has led to the mobilization of people’s aspirations for development and reforms in society. In western societies, economic modernization preceded political and social modernization. Consequently, in their educational thinking, they could lay more emphasis on the needs of the individual than on the economic needs of the country. But India being largely agricultural and poor, has to think of the economic needs of the country before it thinks of the needs of the individual citizen.
