Building Resilience is the Only Option to Live Through The Pandemic! 1

Building Resilience

There’s despair, dejection, and depression in the surrounding. All the sources and channels of information are giving ultra negative and heartbreaking news. The spirit of hope, excitement, and purpose have got buried under the unprecedented crisis of this pandemic for the last more than one year. Everybody is falling prey to the development of the vicious cycle of thoughts, behavior, and insecurities being generated by the side effects of this environment. The last ten days have fractured and decimated the spirits of the strongest of the personalities. All kind of optimism, positivity, and hope has evaporated due to the collapse of all kind of infrastructure in the governing system and people are at the mercy of the God. Such is the fury of the pandemic, that no house has been left in the surrounding, which is unaffected with severe impairments. When the outlook is all gloom and doom, even the most optimistic among us find it difficult to remain normal. How long one can survive with this kind of mindset. At some point, we will have to come out of it.

Very difficult to think of a ray of hope, when we are in the midst of the deep and dark tunnel of the frightening time. All of us are watching the daily headlines of numbers of cases and fatalities and wondering what is going to happen next. There’s a lot of misinformation going around us as well as sensationalistic coverage that only feeds to the fear. We are in a time of massive upheaval. It’s easy to get caught up in your self-generated fears, insecurities, and outcomes. Rumors and fear spread throughout the communities even faster than the virus. Corona has made inroads into every part of our lives. We have been working day and night in decoding the viral genome enigma.

A quote in Italy is used “We stand far apart now, that we can embrace each other later”. What will work in this atmosphere, is, an attitude of sharing, caring, and serving. When we think only about ourselves, we feel dejected, lonely, and miserable. Espouse a larger cause, a nobler idea, and it will help in coming out of the existing mindset. Rather we will be full of beans, enthusiasm, and get motivated. Just thought of giving brings a smile on the face and lifts the spirits. Any challenge seems formidable and daunting only when we get isolated from the people around us. The best way to fight this situation is to include and get associated with people, family members, and friends. This way we develop the RESILIENCE to face any challenge.

Darwin told us that the greatest predictor of resilience was “COLLABORATION and COHESIVENESS”. Resilience is the ability of a living being, to adapt to adversity. It is even said that adversity brings in potential benefits in the long run. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss contains its seeds, its lessons, how to improve the next time. This is the time to reach out to each other in whatever way is possible. We are going to get through this, but get through in a way, that will change us “A NEW NORMAL”. We will be changed by becoming more stronger and more resilient. We can’t simply hide our heads under our pillows and wait for this to pass. We can’t allow ourselves to be passive victims of this terrible pandemic.

More than education, more than experience, more than training, and more than the availability of resources, a person’s level of resilience will determine, who will succeed and who will fail. The first characteristic of resilience is the capacity to accept and face the reality. In looking down at reality, we propose ourselves to act in a certain way, that teaches us how to endure the situation. The second is the ability to find meaning in every aspect of life. Values are very important and also an integral part of defining the meaning of life. Strong value systems work as a structure of scaffoldings in times of trouble. The third building block of resilience is the ability to improvise. It is the ability and capability to face and resolve problems, even in the absence of the availability of minimum tools and resources.

Research shows that, when resilient people face adversity, they look for the good amid the worst. They engage with the available and controllable aspects of their lives, like family, personal health, and giving back to the community. As we continue to navigate uncertain times, situations, and critical conditions, we must convert it into a first-hand opportunity to work for the development of a better public health system to cultivate a stronger nation. Without succumbing to the current situation, and by adopting and adapting, better strategies of resilience, we will be more prepared for the next inevitable crisis, standing in the queue. Each one of us will have to wake up, get up, participate and contribute to the building of a strong society and a nation.
