IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL NUTRITION WEEK

According to a Lancet research that monitored trends in intake of 15 dietary variables from 1990 to 2017 in 195 countries, poor nutrition was responsible for 1 in 5 fatalities which is almost equal to 11 million overall in 2017. According to the same research, India ranks 118th in terms of the lowest number of diet-related fatalities In India, the top dietary risk factor for fatalities and illnesses was a low consumption of whole grains (less than 125 gms per day). The numbers are alarming and cast doubt on India’s standing as the world’s second most populated country.

This is why Nutrition Day and spreading awareness about the same becomes of a high significance to our nation.

The Central government commemorates National Nutrition Week in the first week in September for over 4 decades, to address these health concerns and raise awareness of the significance of nutrition and a balanced diet.

The Food and Nutrition Board established Nutrition Week in 1982, and it is commemorated throughout the country during the first week of September.

The week is celebrated to make it clear to individuals how important nutritious and adaptable eating habits are in order to preserve a healthy way of life.

National Nutrition Week is an annual nutrition event organised at India’s Women’s and Child Development Ministry by the Food and Nutrition Board. The week emphasises the relevance and responsibility for the human body of appropriate diet. The smooth working and growing of a human organism depends on a balanced diet with the mix of needed calories and nutrients.

During this week, The Food and Nutrition Board organises workshops, training on the orientation of Field Workshops, awareness-raising camps and community gatherings through its 43 Community Food and Nutrition Extension Units (CFNEU) situated in all four regions around the country each year.

In accordance with the relevant departments of the State governments, educational institutions and voluntary organizations, the CFNEU organizes workshops, lectures, film and slide demonstrations.

POSHAN Abhiyaan

POSHAN Abhiyaan is a multi-ministerial convergence project launched in 2018, to guarantee that India is free from malnutrition by 2022. POSHAN Abhiyaan aims to reduce malnutrition in the most malnourished districts of India by increasing the use of important Anganwadi Services and enhancing the quality of the provision of Anganwadi services. Its objective is to provide holistic development and appropriate nourishment for women, mothers and children who are pregnant.

CARBOHYDRATES

The body’s energy is optimum as glucose is transformed by carbs more easily. It supports our body in supplying energy for cellular component production. Carbohydrates consist of three components of plant-formed carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are four main kinds of carbs – sugar, fibre and gum. It does not produce any growth in weight until it is consumed frequently by carbs, except as other dietary groups.

Your digestive system breaks glucose or blood sugar carbohydrates down. Your blood stream receives and utilizes glucose as energy for your body to fuel.

You use blood sugar as a result of how much carbohydrates you ingest.

Everything you eat is carbohydrates, whether it’s rice, chips, chapati, or pizza. There is a misconception that carbohydrates are harmful; do not believe anyone who tells you to limit your carbohydrate intake; there is no such thing as a good carb or a poor carb. Carbohydrates are essential for your body’s development and growth. Don’t let anyone convince you differently. Carbs are mainly found in Rice, bread, beans, milk, popcorn, potatoes, cookies, spaghetti etc.

  • They have a high fiber content. Fiber not only fills you up with very few calories (helping you feel full so you eat less), but it also keeps you regular and flushes toxins out of your body.

 

 

FATTY ACIDS/ FAT

 

Fatty acids serve as energy sources as well as membrane components. They have biological actions that impact the metabolism, function, and responsiveness of cells and tissues to hormonal and other signals. Modulation of membrane structure and function; regulation of intracellular signalling pathways, transcription factor activity, and gene expression; and regulation of the synthesis of bioactive lipid mediators are some of the biological functions. Fatty acids impact health, well-being, and disease risk through several actions.

 

COMBINED RATIO OF CARBS: PROTEIN: FATS REQUIRED

 

Some sports nutritionists advocate a 60/20/20 diet. It is a diet in which carbohydrate accounts for 60% of daily calories while fat and protein account for 20% each. Endurance athletes, according to proponents, must maintain this ratio of the three so-called “macronutrients” on a continuous basis in order to perform effectively in training. Other specialists advocate a more balanced 40/30/30 diet.

This means a ratio of 3:1:1 is the right diet ratio in which the food should be consumed.
