The world today is better off than it has been at any other point in history. We are living in the Information Age. At the push of a button, we can have access to any information, not only that of the state or the country or this world, but rather that of our planet, solar system, galaxies, black holes, and the whole universe from its birth to its end in future. What a great time and the world we live in.

There was virtually no economic growth before 1750. The rapid progress made over the last 270-plus years could well be a unique episode in human history. But this growth could be possible only, because like low-hanging fruit, we had forests, open land, cheap energy, and industrial-era breakthroughs. But this growth can’t be sustained forever. The reason is, because of human lust, the natural resources of Earth are evaporating at an astronomical fast pace. Our greatest blessings can be our greatest curses. The busy mind can send us nowhere without direction.

The problems that industrialization and technology have caused and escalated are, environmental, demographic, and socioeconomic. It has created an unsustainable burden on the world’s oceans, skies, soils, and all the nonhuman life forms. In most of our modern life, all diseases are diseases of abundance, not of scarcity. Outside of science and technology, and apart from the legacies created in each family, humanity is struggling today for a sense of cumulative achievement. Technology does raise the wealth of the planet but widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Moreover, innovation has always done both, good and harm. In pursuit of quality of life and comfort, we look at the invention of antibiotics, insecticides, infinite use of synthetic chemicals, transportation, etc. It took us away from Mother Nature. Every time we solve a problem, a new problem comes up. Each invention relies on a subsequent invention to clean up the mess it has made.

Every year in the US, more than 63 million tonnes of food is wasted. Just 700 miles away in Haiti, 53% of inhabitants are undernourished. In the UK 2.4 million people almost 4% of the population own a second home. In Hop, south of Nigeria, 14% of the population I.e. 24.4 million people are homeless. In most of the major cities, most affluent neighborhoods have the most neglected slums nearby. The wealthiest one percent of Americans account for 17% of the country’s total cash income, while the bottom 20% receive less than 4% of the total.

There’s a huge data available, which reveals the intensity of disparity among humanity across the globe. Our world is a strange place that is abundant for some, but scarce for many. We don’t realize that abundance leads to ultra spending, which can harm the quality of life. There’s a fulfillment curve that has four sections. It will help us in understanding how we start in our career and where we reach.

The first section is survival in which a little money brings a large gain in happiness. We become much happier when our basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter are met than, what they are not. When basic requirements are met, we begin to spend on little comforts, like small furniture, cushion on beds, fridges, TV, clothing, etc. They bring in increased fulfillment. They make us happy, but not as happy as the items that satisfied our survival needs. In the third section comes luxuries. Eventually, our spending extends from comforts to luxuries. We move to a good apartment in a good society from a rented house. We look for a good wardrobe and all kinds of amenities in the house including branded gadgets, utensils, ACs, etc. All these things too make us happy. They push us to the peak of fulfillment.

Finally comes the overspending or overconsumption. The sofa is replaced by recliners. Now every gadget, upholstery, or product in the house is replaced by super branded products, where the price is the only criterion of the quality. Soon the house is full of stuff and bigger, more and more becomes a necessity. But these things don’t make us happier. All of these things become a burden and instead of adding fulfillment become a show-off only. As income increases, our lifestyle grows with it.

Gradually our lifestyle becomes more expansive. So, we have to work hard to earn more. But in the process, we would just repeat the process by spending even more. We call it “Hedonic Treadmill” or the rat race. The people in this category think they would be happy if they just have a little more money. But when they get more money, they discover something else they want. They are never content with what they have. And in this cycle, they can never have enough. Most of the new generation of top performers are stuck in the vicious cycle of this treadmill. Despite knowing that it is an illusion, we accept it as a reality of life.

Wealth and status decrease our feelings of compassion for others because wealth and abundance give us a sense of freedom from dependence on others. It leads to greater independence from people, society, and the system. We become more self-focussed only on our opportunities, and thereby convert into a self-centered personality. In the series, we accept that the accumulation of wealth is justified, beneficial, morally defensible, and the only way to live a good life. This attitude helps us in accepting and justify unethical behavior, makes us insensitive, and takes away all the rationality in life.

Accumulation of money or resources is not bad, provided it is done for a purpose. But when it is singularly done only with a purpose of self accumulation, it becomes a lust followed by stress and insecurities. “What a pity that life robs the rich of its beauty and what is worse, entices with its ugliness”, said B. S.Murthy in Glaring Shadow. HAPPINESS, NOT GOLD AND PRESTIGE IS THE ULTIMATE CURRENCY. The pleasure of consumption wears off through time and depends heavily on one’s frame of reference only. Money can certainly help us achieve our goals but does not guarantee fulfillment.
