Today, life is not simple but a complex web. It is becoming increasingly complicated in terms of technological, cultural, ethical, religious, and other understandings and beliefs. With the advent of more facilities and comforts, humanity finds itself trapped in regulations and dependent on multifaceted systems controlled by big corporations and governments. These entities create reliance on facilities or systems, with the provision of their supplies and delivery always under their control. It has become nearly impossible to live without them.

The world today is often described as VUCA—filled with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. The straightforward theory of cause and effect is no longer linear or entirely relevant. Any thought, decision, or action can lead to multiple, contradictory, and often confusing outcomes. Today, diverse interpretations are designed and accepted, each receiving equal validation. There is no analytical or legal mechanism to definitively establish which one is “right.” Achieving true stability and remaining steady seems to be beyond human capability in today’s world. Accepting volatility as the new normal is the only way to stay grounded and make sense of our surroundings.
I have realized that the more we dwell on conflicting social, ethnic, religious, ethical, or political issues, the more confused we become. Today, we live in an Uncertain World, where contradictions, confusion, camouflage, conflicts, and confrontations dominate. There is little space left for cohesion, cooperation, and constructive progress. On the governance front, political agendas driven by the vested interests of corporations have taken precedence over the welfare of the people. An illusion of public welfare is projected in the name of development. Sensitivity toward people’s suffering, climate change, and depleting natural resources has all but disappeared. Fear and insecurity are systematically infused in the name of sects, religion, and national security.

To counter this insecurity, everyone—from individuals to institutions, sects to societies, and countries to nations—is engaged in accumulating power. This ranges from geographical safety to economic dominance, from stoking unreasonable fervor to the stockpiling of perilous and undesirable weapons. The scale at which these are created and developed to defend ideologies, beliefs, or vested interests is immeasurable. We are living in a power-hungry world because “power has the ability not only to defend but to influence others to achieve the outcomes of one’s choices, interests, and preferences.” When the virus of power accumulation infects the mind, objectivity loses its relevance.
In this race for supremacy—from individuals to institutions, from small countries to powerful nations—it often seems like we live in a complex and unlivable world, with occasional glimpses of freedom, joy, amusement, and happiness. Living conditions are always in flux. We constantly experience confusion, reflecting the complexity of life and the world. The state of mind arising from these conditions creates ambiguity in life. We now exist in a world where nothing can be controlled due to our total dependence on its ever-changing and unstable governing factors. Achieving stability is likely beyond the limits of today’s possibilities. The world appears to function like a complicated machine with no clear or tangible output.

So, what is the solution in these challenging VUCA times? A challenge is nothing more than a new situation. Life is a constant process of challenge and response. When the response is inadequate, a gap forms, leading to stress and pain. When the response matches the challenge, serenity and harmony prevail. Today, we need to cultivate a creative, enthusiastic, and opportunistic attitude to navigate this ever-changing and ever-growing environment.
By accepting the world as a Living Mechanism, we open ourselves to the dynamic and breathing reality around us. Embracing the VUCA world with vitality connects us to our responsibilities as part of a living system. As our orientation shifts, our lives begin to expand and grow. As our awareness evolves, we invite greater guidance from within and remain anchored in this ever-changing world.
