We are living in a physical world where only physical systems and physical laws are paramount. Life on Earth is a unique and rarest of rare phenomenon. How life emerged and how it’s sustaining on the planet Earth, and how Nature has to put in its best for this, is beyond our imagination. In fact, even Nature too didn’t have the privilege to bypass those physical laws and systems to create and sustain life on Earth. In this series, we will find that energy is an inherent and most critical characteristic of any physical system, where we can observe that every form of Life is only a medium of the process of transformation of energy.

All living organisms constantly take in and release energy in a cyclic manner. No energy, and no Life. Every moment, in every situation, at every place, every form of living being is only a medium to keep the constant flow or change of energy. Humans, like all other animals, are a specific combination of MATTER, ENERGY, and INFORMATION. More specifically, we can call it a combination of matter and energy steered and structured by information—or we can call it MEI. More or less, the qualitative and quantitative availability of energy along with the pace of flow and processing of information decide the level of civilization not only in this world but in this universe.
What is energy? As we know, everything in this universe is changing or in motion or converting from one form into another. Or we can say that it’s a continuous process and has the ability to induce change. For making anything happen involves movement or activity. Energy has the ability to perform it. “Energy is the capacity or potential to work, the capacity to cause change.” Energy is critically important but intangible, like information. All that is tangible can be regarded as matter. Energy can’t be created or destroyed. Energy is a conserved quantity, having a limitless supply, but still with a finite amount, in the universe.

We can observe the universal manifestations of these transformations ranging from the enormous rotation of galaxies to thermonuclear reactions in stars. On Earth, they range from the terraforming forces of tectonic plates to the cumulative erosive impacts of tiny raindrops. All natural processes, including human activities, are transformations of energy. Civilization’s advances can be seen as a quest for higher energy use required to mobilize greater output and to meet endless demand for a variety of materials, regular advancement of technology, followed by the astronomical flow of information required in the digital world. Today, energy is the only universal currency—one of its many forms must be transformed to get anything done.
Human civilization is about one million years old. Humans, like all animals, are engaged in a struggle for existence. This struggle takes place not only between man and his natural habitat but within the human itself. Civilization or culture is the means adopted and applied by man to carry on his struggle for survival. Culture is made up of many things like tools and weapons, customs and institutions, ceremonies and rituals, art, science, religion, philosophy, and most importantly, the languages, etc. The most essential feature of culture is its continuity, so that a large part of the culture of one generation is passed on to the next.

It’s only a hundred years since we first understood the meaning of the word “ENERGY”. In the human species, culture is the means of harnessing energy for the use of maintaining those customs, rituals, art, historical values, and religion, etc. Therefore, as more and more energy is harnessed, the more highly developed does the culture grow and thrive. Let’s clear a myth—that when we say consumption of energy, it’s the transfer of energy between different states, from one form or object to another.
We have seen that “Culture” will be low if the per capita amount of energy is small. Similarly, “Culture” will be high if the per capita amount of energy is more. So, the development of civilization is directly proportional to the amount of energy under human control and at his disposal for his culture-building, along with the speed and processing of information. So, the amount and quality of ENERGY, along with the free flow of INFORMATION (the impact of which we have started feeling now), are the deciding factors of the level of any civilization.
