“Climate change is the single biggest thing that humans have ever done on this planet. The only thing that needs to be bigger is our movement to stop it.”

It is no secret that climate change is slowly destroying our planet. Despite many organizations’ efforts to stop it, climate change is becoming a big problem for us. The main cause for climate change is probably Global Warming due to greenhouse gas emissions by humans. As we develop in our lifestyle, we are actually causing a problem for the Earth without knowing it.

You must have noticed this sudden change in climate which was, obviously, not present around 20 years ago. As the population increases, the need for more transportation and resources for us also increases. It is not like we can stop using resources either. We have become so used to having these luxuries that we cannot imagine living without them.

Instead of each person going to work in their own separate cars, imagine how much less pollution will be there if those fifty-something people just took a single bus. But it has become our new way of life now and change is not so easy.

The burning of fossil fuels and emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane causes the greenhouse effect causing climate change. The temperature increases in areas that require low temperature and it decreases in areas that require high temperature, causing ecosystem destruction and biodiversity loss.

If we keep the emission of greenhouse gases in check, then the impacts of climate change in the future are going to be unbearable. The change is going to continue through the decades and centuries. But the choice on whether it is a good or bad change is going to depend solely on what we do. If we make enough efforts to control global warming, the consequences may not be so serious. But if we continue in the present fashion, we may have reason to worry.

If we are not careful, many water bodies will dry up and a few dozen countries will face drought. Even now there are many areas that do not get enough water. Drought will only increase due to climate change. In many other areas where precipitation is supposed to decrease at a certain time of the year, the precipitation shows an unusual increase, harming the area and sometimes even causing a flood.

The agriculture industry is going to be the most affected due to climate change. As we know, some crops can only grow in certain weather conditions. So, if the weather doesn’t match the required one, then that cop will not grow. A lot of money will be lost by millions of farmers all over the world.

Not only will the farmers be affected, but we the people will have scarcity of food as well. Fresh farm-grown produce will not be available any longer. We will be forced to eat artificially made food and produce. This is not healthy or safe as they are loaded with preservatives. Even pollinators, like bees, will have a hard time thriving if there are no crops to pollinate.

We all know that due to climate change, the glaciers in the ice-capped poles are melting faster than ever. Polar bears no longer have a safe place to call home. You may have seen pictures of this sad sight in the news or newspapers. A polar bear hanging on for its dear life on a glacier that is only going to melt further. Is this what we want to witness? Shouldn’t we put an end to this injustice we are inflicting upon other creatures?

All we have to do is stop this unhealthy lifestyle. As we know, the main cause for the emission of greenhouse gases is the burning of fossil fuels. We also know that fossil fuels are a non-renewable source of energy, which means that they won’t be around for a very long time if we keep using them at this rate. So we should try using alternative types of fuels.

Instead of using conventional modes of transportation, which use fossil fuels as their primary source of energy, we can start using electric, or hybrid vehicles. In our developing world, almost all main car dealerships have started providing electric cars. There are even electric trains ad electric and hybrid buses.

Large-scale deforestation does not help matters. We know that plants and trees absorb carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere. By cutting down trees, we are only risking our lives more. We should at least plant more trees if we have no choice but to cut trees. Cutting a reasonable amount of trees and then planting more will be more beneficial to the environment because there are animals and birds that are dependent on these trees. Cutting them all down at a single time will leave them with nowhere else to go.

Population overgrowth is another cause of climate change. Some countries, like China, have strict rules that there should only be two children in a family because of uncontrollable population growth. Too many people on this planet mean more need for resources and more global warming which leads to climate. We have to outsmart the system and change the future. Always be one step ahead and think more about the planet so that climate change can be controlled.

In a way, climate change will produce a domino effect, destroying one thing at a time. First, it will be ecosystem loss, then shortage of food, and eventually even clean breathing air is going to be hard to get. If this is not stopped, then we may be looking at a future with an unbearable climate that does not support life.

“The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have the facts and solutions. All we have to do is wake up and change.”

– Greta Thunberg
