Who does like mountains? So, today let me take you to another mountain side which is crushing the country below massive weight. Our country generates 1.5 million metric tons of waste every day. This is enough to construct 3 Burj Khalifa every day. Deonar’s dumpyard has crossed a height of 14 floors right now. Delhi has an entire mountain of waste in the city on which trucks can climb like this and Bengaluru which was once known as the city of lakes. Today show us photos of a foaming lake.

I want to shed some light on how we can stop our waste from ending up as a waste. Did you know your old cycle tyre can be converted into a clock? Did you know mobile phone holder can be made entirely from screws? And your old cartons can change into a classroom desk in a school somewhere. Celebrating Earth’s Day once a year for name sake can actual make any difference? Till the time we understand our role in the Planet’s problem and start thinking of solutions at our own individual levels.

During Covid-19, we’re at home getting bored, with no things to do come let’s start some challenge. The Challenge to be eco-friendly through some challenges. What can we do to reduce waste? We can start right from our homes. This is a paper carton from which I ate ice-cream yesterday. Now I have two options – 1. If I throw it with the rest of my waste in the dustbin then it will mix with the rest of my waste and get contaminated. Then it’ll directly reach to landfills and it will help increases the landfills height from 14 floors to 15 floors. Or else, I have option 2 I can drop off this carton at my nearest drop off point. But what difference does this one small step make? Offcourse it will make difference. Safai Sathis can sell these cartons to scrap dealers and earn income. This can generate employee. People can get jobs by cleaning and sorting out these cartons and these cartons are sent to the recycling plant. These Cartons are converted into sheets at recycling plants. Did you know the sheets can be used to make furniture! They are used to make seat support in rickshaws and are even used to make classroom benches. By using technology, a cartons can become a toothpaste cover or a roof for a home. This process reduces waste and the carton you think is waste gets a second life. So, you can give return gift to our planet earth by returning this carton.
Step 1: Rinse the carton from outside and inside to clean it. Once rinsed, pull out the flaps and flatten the carton.
Step 2: Then put the straw back into the carton.
Step 3: Drop off the cartons at your nearest drop off point. It’s that simple.

An organization called RVR Greenlife has collected more than 65 lakhs cartons from Mumbai and recycled them till now. They have donated more than 400 school desks and more than 1 lakh notebooks and notepads and several others such recycled products too and this not only one organization that has done it. Similarly, there are many organizations across India that are waiting for your carton to be recycled. There are some small steps to change our waste into a solution. Let’s make it simple. Remember the 3Rs – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. Reduce your e-waste for example- Battery. The chemicals inside batteries can cause landfill fires. There is a double loss in such a scenario. Harmful Chemicals in electronics get into our air, water and soil and we end up consuming this poison in one way or another. On the other hand, the valuable metals in our electronic waste get completely wasted. We throw away so much money in the form of electronic waste. So don’t waste e-waste in your regular waste.

It’s small task, but for the Earth, it is nothing less than a gift. The pressure from single use items is increasing every day. Some things we can’t eliminate from our lives, so let’s reduce them. Think about all the uses and throw things in our lives but can be replaced by reusable things. When you use a thing multiple times you strategically reduce future demand for the item. Just like cartons are getting recycled. Similarly, today furniture is being made from nontraditional items. What was once considered waste is now being used to decorate our homes and offices. Your plastic waste can be used to make jerseys. Many people give old items an entirely new form. What was once considered waste is now becoming a resource. Now the choice is yours whether do you want to increase India’s problem with your waste or do you want to reduce your waste and be a part of the solution?
