
Bird masturbation is natural and widespread, occurring more often in wild birds than captive birds, according to new research.
For years, vets and bird keepers have treated masturbation in captive parrots as a red flag, often viewing it as a sign of loneliness or unnatural living conditions.
In some cases, the behavior has prompted dietary changes, hormone therapy, or even surgery.
A new study says that assumption has it backwards.
Across dozens of bird species, masturbation turns out to be a normal, widespread behavior, and it actually shows up more often in wild birds than in captive ones.
The research was led by Chloe Heys at the University of Lancashire, alongside Kevin Arbuckle at Swansea University, Matilda Brindle at the University of Oxford, and Tom Price at the University of Liverpool.
Data from scientists and bird keepers
The team pulled together data from existing scientific literature and combined it with information gathered directly from bird keepers and breeders.
They used surveys and online bird-keeping communities as sources.
In total, they compiled data covering 120 bird species across 22 major bird groups, spanning both captive and wild populations.

A behavior hiding in plain sight
The results point toward masturbation being a genuine, evolved part of bird sexual behavior, not a symptom of captivity gone wrong.
It turned up widely across bird species, forming part of a broader repertoire of sexual behaviors rather than standing out as an aberration.
Notably, the behavior was more common in wild birds and in birds raised by their own parents, rather than hand-reared by humans, the opposite of what the captivity-driven-stress explanation would predict.
The numbers back that up in detail. Male birds masturbated more often than females, with 55 percent of male records showing the behavior compared with 36 percent of female records, though both sexes clearly engaged in it.
Juveniles and adults masturbated at almost identical rates, 100 percent and 97 percent respectively.
And captive birds were, if anything, less likely to masturbate than their wild counterparts, directly undercutting the longstanding assumption that solitary captive life is what drives the behavior.
Rethinking what counts as a medical problem
Heys, a senior lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Lancashire, said the findings should reshape how the behavior gets understood and treated.
“Despite assumptions that masturbation among captive birds like parrots is a result of their often-solitary living, our study finds that it is natural, healthy, and widespread across diverse bird species, even in different environments,” Heys said.
“Through enhancing our biological understanding of this unusual trait, our research can give owners, breeders, and conservationists more clarity if birds in their care display this behavior, by highlighting that veterinary interventions trying to stop masturbation may actually be causing more harm to birds.”
“I hope that our research can trigger a shift in the current advice that vets give to bird owners and ultimately improve animal welfare.”
A problem troubling vets for years
Ana Basto, a veterinary lecturer in exotic and wildlife medicine at the University of Lancashire, pointed to how often this exact question comes up in clinical practice without much research to back up the advice vets actually give.
“There has historically been a lack of research around masturbation in birds like parrots, despite how we’re frequently consulted on it as vets,” Basto said.
“This research is pivotal and will be a step towards achieving a more holistic understanding of why and how birds behave the way they do.”
“I hope the findings therefore enable vets to give more accurate advice to protect birds’ welfare which remains our key priority across the industry.”

A bigger pattern across the animal kingdom
Co-author Matilda Brindle, an evolutionary biologist at Oxford, situated the findings within a broader scientific conversation about sexual behavior that doesn’t serve reproduction directly.
“This research adds to a vital and growing body of work highlighting that non-reproductive sexual behaviors occur right across the animal kingdom, not just in humans,” Brindle said.
“The fact that masturbation seems to be even more common in wild birds than those in captivity has huge implications for their welfare – especially given that folk husbandry often advises bird keepers to discourage or punish this behavior, sometimes even resorting to surgery and hormonal interventions.”
“Masturbation is not a pathological or aberrant consequence of captivity, it is part of a healthy range of sexual behaviors.”
Implications beyond the clinic
The implications reach beyond individual pet care.
A clearer understanding of these behaviors could improve welfare standards more broadly and even support breeding programs and conservation efforts.
A more accurate picture of avian mating behavior helps researchers and practitioners alike make better decisions for birds in captivity and in the wild.
