“Because we cannot scrub our inner body, we need to learn a few skills to help cleanse our tissues, organs and mind. This is the art of Ayurveda.”

You may have noticed that babies get sick very often and always have to be rushed to a doctor. This is because all humans are born with a basic immune system that is considered weak. So, if a baby comes in contact with some bacteria or virus, its body will not be able to fight off the bacteria easily and the child gets sick. As the child grows, its body is exposed to many microbes, and antibodies are produced in their bodies to fight certain diseases. That is how our immunity increases.

For certain diseases, we have to go and get a vaccine to produce antibodies. The doctors inject a very small dose of the bacteria or virus into our bodies such that it can produce enough antibodies to protect us if, in case we do somehow catch the disease by other means. The difference with this is that when the bacteria or virus is applied in small amounts, it will not pose a threat to us. But if we somehow acquire the virus by other means before we get vaccinated, it could be dangerous enough to be deadly.
A very good example is the Covid-19 vaccine. We have read about so many cases of millions of people dying because of this deadly virus. When we get vaccinated, our bodies produce antibodies specific to the coronavirus, so that if the virus does somehow find its way into our bodies, there will be an army to fight it off. By getting the vaccine, we have increased our immunity to the virus so that it will not have much of an effect on us.

Over the past few years, our whole lifestyle has changed in such a way that we do not spend a lot of time with our environment. We are always protected in the safety of our homes or in our workplaces. So, we do not really come in contact with the outside world or get our hands dirty. In this way, our immunity decreases and we become vulnerable to various diseases and our bodies will not be able to fight bacteria and viruses.
Using the practice of Ayurveda, we can increase our immune systems. A famous author, Charaka, mentioned in his book that was written in the 2nd century AD, that microbes spread through the air, water, and soil. Nowadays, due to human exploitation of these three elements, climate change, and the large amount of antibiotics that we introduce into our bodies, the human immune system is getting weaker by the decade.
One question arises; how to become more immune? Our diet and our lifestyle influence our immune system to a very large extent. If we need to get better at fighting off diseases, we must learn to treat our bodies better. Here are some ways to improve your immune system through Ayurvedic practices:

- Keeping ourselves hydrated: Ayurveda recommends that we drink sufficient amounts of water throughout the day. Water is one of the main components our bodies need to stay fit and healthy. To stay immune, one must drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Dehydration can lead to various health casualties including heart problems and kidney dysfunctions.
- Ayurvedic diet: A regular balanced diet is necessary to keep ourselves healthy and to fight bacteria and diseases. Our diet must consist of food that is rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants which can help strengthen our immune system. Regular ayurvedic detoxifications through a panchakarma cleanse or fasting is good for our immune systems.

- The intake of immunity strengthening herbs:We can try to start our day with some form of herbal teas made from tulsi or ginger, followed by drinking 15 ml of amla juice. Cooking with turmeric and black pepper in our meals can also increase our immunity as well as that of our family members.
- Regular sleep cycle:When we sleep, our body is actually awake and undergoing a lot of biological processes. It heals many worn tissues, stores information in the brain, restores energy, regulates hormones, and so on. We owe it to our bodies to have a better sleep cycle so that they can perform all these functions. Lack of sleep is Vata dosha in Ayurveda and it can cause the build-up of stress hormones.
- Exercising regularly:Exercising regularly is a good way to keep our bodies fit and it can help build up our immune system as well. However, excess exercising or Athi vyayamath can cause weakness or loss of body tissues so we must stick to a regular exercise pattern and make sure we don’t over-exert ourselves.

- Supplements or Ayurvedic medications to boost immunity:When we are generally not an immune person, it is recommended that we take some form of supplements that are safe and healthy for our bodies. Supplements made from Triphala or ginger can be used to give our immunity the right boost. There are many Ayurvedic medicines that can help as well like Amalaki Rasayana, Arogyavardini Vati, Brahma Rasayana, Chyawanprash, and so on.

As our environment changes, it is evident that we need to have a good immune system now more than ever. With all the pollution that is present everywhere, it is certain that there are many dangerous bacteria and viruses which can also mutate and cause a lot of problems to the human race. It is our job to keep ourselves and our friends and family safe. Start living a healthier and better lifestyle and set an example for others to do the same. Our body is a temple. Let us keep it that way.
“Life (ayu) is the combination (samyoga) of body, senses, mind, and reincarnating soul. Ayurveda is the most sacred science of life, beneficial to humans both in this world and the world beyond.”
