On the 26th of August, 1978, Sanjay Chopra and Geeta Chopra were brutally murdered. I can still remember the day and recollect the trauma everybody in the whole society had gone through. Most of us could not sleep for many nights. None of us could believe that any human can do this kind of beastly act. Before that, I don’t remember of happening of any such horrid incident in my life. Since then I have been observing a gradual shift in the perception of the society, where aggression, unhealthy competition, personal vendetta, and many such traits under the name of the angry young man were synonymous with fake self-dignity and false pride. Today, the news of such happenings is so common that we have not only grown immune to such incidents, rather accepted them as a part of our daily life. Only a very small percentage of the society gets affected and pray for better days. Only this segment gives a ray of hope that humanity is still alive.

The essence of being human is explained by Desmond Tutu, the Nobel prize awardee. He said, “One of the sayings in our country is UBUNTU means the essence of being human. It speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another. Whereas we are very closely connected, and whatever we do affects the whole world. When we do better things in the society, it spreads out and gives fragrance, which is for the whole humanity”. This individual development leads to the development of society.
Society is the sum of all individuals and organizations operating within it. When a society does not work, it is because of the individuals and the groups, that are out of balance within themselves. A healthy society is a balanced society that works on all levels and fronts of life. There are two very important factors in a human’s life. By looking at those factors, we can identify what creates a balanced society. When we look at the first factor, the family, extended family, and friends come in this category, where we work on relationships, concerns, caring, compassion, cooperation, and helping each other. We can’t treat the family as on the parameters of work, profession, business, and right or wrong, since other life values are involved in it. The second factor is purely linked with our profession, job, business, where we do something productive to create earnings, to support the family.

The same goes for society or the nation. If the nation is considered only on the parameters of a technologically rich, growing economy, GDP, or business, we will be creating a cold and materialistic society, as is happening in today’s world. Then the humans will be sacrificing all values at the cost of an increase in production and creation of more and more profits and net worth. This is a mirage, the more we indulge in it, the more we will be restless. We will gain in this game only by sacrificing human values. If our interest is limited to preventing only physical illness, we will have to face the problems of stress, depression, addiction, and other allied psychological problems. We are seeing that as computer science has transformed our world in the last fifty years. Similarly, behavioral science along with social values is going to change in the next fifty years, where human values will have no values.
We are living in an era in which we are insensitive to human tragedies. We can easily notice that there is an alarming disparity between our ability to “know things” and our ability to “understand things”. In fact, in modern society, we are being trained only to do our jobs. We are never told to assess the impacts, outcomes, and consequences of our doings. We are in the process of developing a society that is almost blind to the consequences of its acts. Being blind to sense our actions, tacitly means that we never feel the need to gauge the magnitude and their effective impact. Therefore, we become insensitive to real conditions. How our actions can affect adversely, we never assess, and that is why our psyche remains blind and silent.

Human values must be considered as an asset for a healthy society, which is the basis of our existence. They have a deeper impact on ethical and social issues. It helps in the development of a greater understanding, coming from a wider humanistic perspective. This is something that is desperately required in a world which is being riven by meaningless divisions and conflicts. These commercial values in the undercover of growth and development have started becoming the only and ultimate culture of the society, that of the nation and the whole world.
Wholesome culture is the feature of the prosperous variety in opinions, behaviors, beliefs, passion, and disposition. This particular process or way of living is eclipsing slowly and slowly. We must fill the gap between the enormous potency of our actions and the limited emotional resources. If we don’t act fast, we may lose perception of the global impact of our decisions and actions, thereby leading to great confusion and chaos, which is the reality of today’s world. Finally, every thought and action of ours affects, not only ourselves, rather the whole world, very hard.
