Coronavirus is here to stay; we have to learn to live with it!!!

We have been passing through the very first global pandemic in the history of the digital era. Within a short span of a few months, the world has been transformed. People are holed up at home, practicing social distancing, and working remotely all over the world. With the help of the Internet, we could manage to make it possible to withdraw physically from the outside world and keepourselves updated with all the volatile activities happening around us. Although life has come to a halt, systems are still working and hope to keep on working maybe in a different manner soon. Almost everybody on this earth has been affected in one way or the other. This has brought down changes in our lives.

For the next few years, life will not remain the same. We will talk to each other behind a face mask, carry the astringent smell of hand sanitizer. We will continue to walk and work six feet apart, meeting online. Life will move more quickly than usual, but with emptymalls, stadiums, movie halls, plays, and concerts.

There are instant changes in our thought patterns, and we have acknowledged and accepted them the way they have come. School lessons have moved online, groceries, and other commodities of daily needs are delivered by e-commerce platforms, work meetings take place over Skype, zoom like platforms. Even before the outbreak, people were already working from home, shopping online, having food delivered, but this outbreak has entrenched the direction in which the whole society has already been moving. And one thing is definite that post corona, life will never fully return to normal and A new normal will become the reality.

We have been observing a growing anxiety among the majority of the people coupled with racism, panic buying and the proliferation ofinnumerable conspiracy theories. Although the percentage of crime has come down, looting and theft have increased. There’s a feeling of altruism and generosity among those who can afford it. Since most of the economic activities are stalled, there will be a big problem of job losses, small business getting closed and the stock market tumbling to the levels never imagined. The majority of the people are facing financial hardships, phobia of losing loved ones, and marriages.

Relationships will get affected and some may collapse because of COVID STRESS SYNDROME. People will become xenophobic (wary of foreigners may be the carrier of viruses). About 10 percent of the people affected by the coronavirus will develop the psychological disorder after the peak of the pandemic. People will become fastidious germophobes, striving to avoid touching, shaking hands with one another. Side by side some people will also improve their resilience by learning and adapting to new strategies.

But the positive takeaways are as manufacturing industries, transport networks, the aviation industry, and businesses have closed down, it has brought in a sudden drop in carbon emissions. The levels of pollution in certain big cities world over has reduced by more than 50 percent, because of the measures taken to contain this virus. In China emissions have fallen 25 percent and coal use by 40 percent in China’s six largest power plants. In Europe, satellite images show NO2 nitrogen dioxide emission fading away over north Italy. A similar phenomenon is visible in Spain and the United Kingdom.

At present, the fact remains that the virus is not going anywhere. There’s always a distinct risk of brisk spurt in infections. For developing herd immunity, we need to have a minimum, 60 to 70 percent population globally to have protective antibodies against the virus, before the life might once again look the way we remember. The safe way to reach that level of immunity, is dependent only on a vaccine. In current situations, it is far away, maybe a year or so.

As the lockdown is relaxed, state authorities will be required to closely monitor the graph of infections. Effective Containment will be the next step. It depends on three things, TEST, TRACE, and ISOLATE. It requires a lot of testing to know and identify who is sick, contacting the identified and quarantine everyone who is exposed and finally isolate the contagious people to keep them infecting others. For India, it’s almost a near to impossible task, but there’s no cut short or an alternative.
