In the Mandya district, there is a lush and green plant in the sacred site of Sri Venkataramana Swamy Temple in Karighatta, Srirangapatna. The plant has been there for thousands of years and there is a story behind why this plant remains ever-green. As per the scriptures, the story of the evergreen plant goes back to Treta Yuga, where a renowned sage Bhrigu performed penance along the banks of the northern and southern Kaveri and Lokapavani rivers in Karighatta.
At that time, Lord Narayana incarnated as a shadow. It is believed that Sage Bhrigu must have become one with the plant to continue his divine services to the Lord. The plant earned its name as Bhrigu Maharishi Plant. People believe that Sage Bhrigu continues to offer daily prayers and services to the Lord with utmost devotion through this plant.
