An emotional ineptitude, desperation, panic, stress, and recklessness in the lives of individuals, families, communities, and all our collective lives is the outcome of ultra-fast changes taking place around us.

The surging emotional breakouts, rampant rage, chronic despair, superficial values, ugly picture of volatility, and violence in our lives are the gift of our focus on, only and only materialistic development. Our perception of life has become so myopic, that we have flushed life out of life itself. And the irony is that we are religiously following it without giving thought to anything else. The fact is that today, mentally we are sicker in comparison to physiological sickness. 

 The level of education and skills have increased and people with good IQ have all the good opportunities available to perform and achieve. But why it happens that people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do surprisingly well. The difference quite often lies in the abilities called “EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE”. It includes self-control, zeal, persistence, resilience, and the ability to motivate oneself. There are times when the fabric of society seems to unravel at even greater speed, when selfishness, violence, and the meanness of the spirit seem to be rotting the goodness of our communal lives. Hence the argument for the importance of emotional intelligence hinges on the link between sentiment, character, and moral instincts.

 Our deepest feelings, our passions, and our longings are essential guides in our lives. Human owes much of its existence to the power of these feelings. We have seen parental sacrifice for their progeny, which has been repeated countless times in human history and prehistory. It has happened countless times in the larger course of evolution of our species. Without parental sacrifices, the ‘Reproductive Success’, in passing on one’s gene to future generations, which is an essential part of the evolution of human beings was not possible. But, from the perspective of a parent, deciding in a moment of crisis, it is nothing more than ‘LOVE’, a pure feeling of heart. 

Our emotions have been not only been our guides rather an integral and essential part of the evolutionary long-drawn process. What we are born with is what worked for the last 50000 human generations, not the last 500 or 5 generations. The slow, deliberate process of evolution which have shaped our emotions, have done their work for a million years. The last 10000 years, despite having witnessed the rapid rise of human civilization, have left little imprint on our biological templates for emotional life. 

 Let’s find out how biological changes take place during emotional outbursts. With Anger, blood flows to the hands, making it easier to grasp a weapon or strike at the foe. Heart rate increases with a rush of hormones generating a flush of energy, strong enough for vigorous action. With Fear, blood goes to the large skeletal muscles, such as in the legs, making it easier to flee. At the same time, the body freezes only for a moment allowing time to gauge whether hiding might be a better option. Happiness fosters available energy, which in turn helps in the enhancement of stamina to go for an increase in the activities. Love, tender feelings entail parasympathetic arousal, developing a pattern of the relaxation response. It also sets in the reaction that generates a general state of calm and contentment facilitating cooperation. 

 Lifting of eyebrows in surprise allows the taking in of a longer visual sweep and also permits more light to strike the retina. This offers more information about the unexpected event. Sadness brings a drop in energy and enthusiasm for life’s activities. It diverts the pleasures and deepens the depression, and also slows down the body’s metabolism.

 We have two minds. One that thinks and the other that feels. First is the part of the rational mind, and second is the act of the emotional mind. These fundamentally two different ways of functioning, interact to construct our mental life. These two minds, the emotional one and the rational one, operate in close harmony for most of our lives. Generally, there’s a balance between emotional and rational minds. The emotional mind feeds and informs the operations of the rational mind. The rational mind refines and sometimes vetoes the inputs of emotions. Thus the emotional and the rational minds are semi-independent and semi-interdependent faculties. They reflect the operation of distinct, but they have interconnected circuiting in the brain. 

 For rationality, emotions play a vital role in our lives. In the ever-going close contest of feeling and thought, the emotional faculty guides our every moment’s decisions, working closely with the rational mind, enabling or disabling the thought itself. Likewise, the thinking brain plays an executive and final decision-making role in our emotions. In a sense, we have two brains, or two minds, or two different kinds of intelligence. How we do or perform in life is determined by both. It is not just the IQ (intelligence quotient), but the EQ (emotional quotient), that matters the most. The intellect can’t work at its best, without emotional intelligence. This turns into the old understanding of the clash between reason and the feeling on the head. Both are equally important. We must find the intelligent balance of the two. The new paradigm urges us, is to harmonize both, THE HEAD AND THE HEART. Since both are inter complementary, so, we can live a healthy life.
