Lost Harmony: How Judging Attitude Divides Us 1

Today, it seems that the whole world is in turmoil. The very word HARMONY is not only missing; rather, an environment of suspicion is prevailing—between countries, states, religious beliefs, communities, bordering states, within families, and even among individuals. The symphony of trust and tranquility has evaporated. Every individual and institution has grown insecure by evaluating and judging ongoing situations and holding others responsible for them. It feels as if the whole world has gone insane or mentally sick.

Why do human beings—so astonishingly intelligent and technologically advanced—even after so much progress and development, not apply that quality of intelligence to their own lives and associated existence? Why is there so much stress, struggle, conflict, and pain? Is this really part of the process of evolutionary development, or the end of everything?

As humans, surviving and thriving are our basic instincts. As a consequence, we automatically end up judging people and situations around us. In the process, from individuals to institutions, religious communities to people of the East and West, states to countries, we create our own sets of rules. We set our own parameters for what is right or wrong, good or bad. When people look at others through their own lens, they judge them based on personal interests—interests that often have little to do with the welfare of others. The fact is that when we judge others, we do not define them; we define ourselves.

Judgment is a reaction born out of fear. Human nature is such that we are openly prideful, secretly judgmental, and cowardly in conflict. At the deepest level, judgment stems from a longing for recognition, appreciation, and validation. For some, judging others is a way to feel better about themselves. When they criticize, it gives them a sense of superiority, which, in turn, might boost their egos. In fact, judging others is a reflection of our own issues because the judgment we place on others reveals more about us than about them. It not only affects our mental state but also impacts our physical well-being.

In fact, our thoughts generate chemical messengers, which ultimately result in emotions. These emotions influence the production of proteins in our cells, which form the backbone of our health. When we persistently think impulsively, react emotionally, or behave negatively, the process of protein production is adversely affected. It becomes an incessant loop of cynical thoughts, negative emotions, and disrupted cellular functions. Judging others only makes us prisoners of our own behavior. Before judging someone, we forget that everyone has their own struggles. Life is too short to judge others.

If we make a small shift by replacing judgment with understanding, we can transform not just our perceptions but our entire lives. Unknowingly, we all search for significance in one way or another. However, as per the existing trend of our world’s value system, we have been searching for it externally, whereas it can only be found within. It becomes elusive when sought outside.

Understanding is such a powerful thing that it can immediately shift the way we perceive situations. Before judging someone, it is better to understand their pain, their situation, and their struggles. Understanding leads to acceptance, whereas judgment leads to separation. When you have a hammer of understanding, every problem looks like a nail. Communication is everything, and when woven with understanding, words can create beautiful things.
