As humans, we shape our environment, and the environment shapes us. Let’s evaluate and examine the interaction between humans and our environment. Human development and biodiversity are inextricably linked. The degradation of our environment coupled with the deterioration of the ecosystem and decline in biodiversity has a close link with that part of human growth and development which leads to self-destruction.

Many of the threats to biodiversity, from habitat destruction, ecosystem degradation to climate change are the outcome of unhealthy economic and pseudo-social developments. In other words, human development and biodiversity loss have a close link. Human development alone or in isolation, without keeping all the natural systems intact will jeopardize the very existence of all the living beings on earth.

On 6th May 2019, the IPBES (the intergovernmental platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), published its first global report on biodiversity since 2005. It was prepared by 150 leading experts from fifty countries. The report confirmed that, at present, Nature is being destroyed, faster than at any other time in human history. A million more species will become extinct within the next few decades.

The Destruction of Nature and Climate Change are the twin emergencies, threatening humanity today. The reason is, humanity is exclusively dependent on the rich biodiversity of nature. It can’t survive without biodiversity, which we have forgotten in this endless vicious cyclic race of competitive development. Right now, the unbalanced equation of limited natural resources and increasing requirements has created an imbalance in nature.

The important visible signs of climate change are there for all to see. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, has lost more than 80% of its ice since 1912. It is estimated that in less than 20 years, there will be no ice on it. Moreover, decreasing rainfall is drying the forest, leaving it increasingly vulnerable to fires. It will be devastating for the whole region’s food supply system. As we have read in many articles, that major portion of the ARCTIC ICE will melt by the end of this century. It will not only increase the sea levels but cut down the availability of freshwater affecting the complex system of rivers flowing, which helps in keeping this biodiversity intact.

Human beings have made great progress in understanding nature with the power of science and technology. Consistent researches have resulted in advanced technological developments, making life comfortable and easier than ever before. It is increasing day by day and also beyond the comfort of our lives. With the help of technologies, an unhealthy race to grab power to take control over everything is prevalent in the whole world. We are seeing, powerful countries are bullying smaller and weaker countries and also taking control of their natural resources.

Some strong and powerful countries have started using natural resources as if they are infinite. Strong countries are becoming stronger with the help of science and technology. Using science as a tool, innovative features are being created and developed with the available natural resources. There is a race for the development of technologies and weapons of mass destruction. The situation is so volatile that experts have started predicting the 21st century to be the last century of human existence on this earth.

Life on Earth only exists in a spatial relationship to the environment or the atmosphere. There’s a critical configuration and fragile combination of elements and gases. Not too much carbon dioxide, plenty of nitrogen and oxygen, and only minute amounts of other gases are required for life to sustain on earth. Finally, all life forms need access to two simple and plentiful of gases Hydrogen and Oxygen. Water so necessary to life is found primarily on top of the earth’s crust or only a short distance beneath it, or in the atmosphere above it. If this spatial configuration of each of these is disturbed even slightly, we can imagine the outcome.

In early 1930, Einstein wrote to Freud (great psychologist) to ask his thoughts on how further war might be prevented. In his response, Freud wrote back that “THANATOS is at work in every living creature and is striving to bring it to ruin and to reduce life to its original form of inanimate matter”. He referred it as a DEATH INSTINCT.

To Freud, THANATOS was an innate biological process with significant and emotional consequences, a response to, and a way to, relieve unconscious psychological pressures. But COSMOS neither treasures nor regrets humans. It permits us with marvelous neutrality and could do this without any interference. Although we are a remarkably successful biological manifestation, our aptitude for annihilation is largely limited to wiping out ourselves only. The universe would get on perfectly well without us.
