What and Why?

Recycling is the phenomenon of converting scrap waste such as paper, plastic, metal, etc. into new products by reprocessing them.
Let us try to understand it better by using the example of paper. You must have noticed that there are people who come to our homes and purchase old scrap paper. Then they are taken to a factory where they are soaked in water and chemicals to break them down. They are then chopped and heated to further break them down into strands of cellulose. The mixture that results from this process is known as pulp or slurry and is used to make paper.
Now we can see from the above example that just by recycling scrap paper, we can avoid cutting down millions of trees every year. Thus, contributing to saving our environment. Therefore, recycling is effective to conserve our environment.
How?
Now that we understand the importance of the practice of recycling our waste. Let us discuss a few ways in which we can practice recycling in our daily lives while we are stuck in quarantine.
Unlike Reuse and Reduce, we cannot directly recycle our waste on our own as it involves reprocessing the scrap waste materials and requires industrial equipment. So, at an individual level, we can contribute to it by
- Trash Divide:

These days most of us are either working or studying from our homes. It has provided us with the opportunity to carry out a lot of our household chores by ourselves. While we are at it, we can start the practice of recycling by dividing it into recyclable and non-recyclable trash. It will help reduce the disposal of recyclable waste.
- It’s Not Just the Newspapers:

People usually only collect newspapers to recycle, but other pieces of scrap paper are recyclable as well. So the next time you don’t need a piece of paper, add it to your pile of newspapers kept for recycling.
- The Long-Lasting Glass:

Items made out of glass can be recycled endlessly, making them an exceptional recycling product. So, next time you have a product made of glass that you don’t need anymore, collect them for recycling.
- In Your Neighborhood:

Do some research for the recycling center available near your locality and try to drop off your collection of recyclable waste whenever you can. It will not only help you get rid of junk from around your home but also help to turn these scrap pieces of paper, metal, plastic, glass, etc. into new products instead of just being disposed of as toxic waste.
- Knowledge is Key:

According to a study, more than 70% of the waste generated and disposed of by an average household can be used for recycling to produce new products. But due to a lack of proper knowledge regarding recyclable and non-recyclable wastes, most of this waste is thrown away.
So, educating ourselves is integral to practicing recycling in our lives.

New Challenges in the Covid World

As we fight against this virus, there is an increased demand for commodities such as a glove, facemasks, PPE kits, etc. but at the same time, lack of proper disposal of these products has led to widespread soil and water pollution among other things.
Recycling can play a crucial role to curb this issue as most of the gloves and masks can be made out of recycled products, and then they too can be recycled to make new ones.
In Conclusion
With the ever-increasing demands for different commodities around the world and the limited availability and uneven distribution of resources, recycling is the need of the hour to meet our needs and to ensure sustainable development.
