It has been almost more than a month since some concerns or thoughts could be briefed in the form of a write-up. Lots of observations, serious concerns, and ideas have been floating around and knocking on the door of the mind. But the mental state of helplessness, that nothing could improve has been restricting any good thought to reach the stage of elaboration. Again the same unanswered questions about the relevance of life, the physical world, the role of humans, and the definition of humanity were pricking the mind severally. The role of an individual, family, society, heads of state, and global harmony are the haunting questions disrupting the whole flow of my normal thought process.

To know more about what is happening in the surroundings, sometimes I switch on the TV news channels. Once, while I was watching a popular news channel, the news of some violence between the two sections of society was streaming. In the process, some vehicles were burnt by the public. My four years granddaughter was sitting with me. She asked, Dadu, why this vehicle is burnt by the people. I was shocked and speechless before the innocent baby. The instant thought came into my mind, who is responsible for all these incidents which are happening around us? Is it the INDIVIDUAL, SOCIETY, or the GOVERNMENT?
The whole records in the history of past revolutions demonstrate beyond doubt that every attempt to solve the social issues with political means led to the creation of an ultra wing of extremism and thereby spreading terrorism. In earlier times, people knew where they stood and used to take care of one another. They didn’t look to the government to help them out when things got difficult. Had governments played a productive and positive role, today, despite the great strides made in science and technology, the world would have become a better place to live in. But it’s not that. There’s extreme hatred and mistrust among governing leaders and the nations. The very survival of human life seems to be in peril.

Ronald Reagan in his 1981 inaugural address said, “Government is not the solution to our problems, Government is the problem”. Thatcher and Reagan believed that society and government are two different things. Society usually meets the private ties of mutual obligation and fellowship that bind people together, the people who have different backgrounds and unequal education, resources, and wealth. Government is the public administration of the affairs of the people constituted into a body politic as citizens and equality. Society involves community and government polity.
According to them, there are no such things as a society. There are only families who look after one another. The idea that government is the solution to the people’s problems rests on a mistaken belief in the existence of society.
But society does exist. And families are the strongest unit structures that make up the society around us. It has been observed that children who grew up in strongly bonded families, contribute positively to society. Those families which keep good bonds and maintain relationships in society have to require a lot of communication, understanding, acceptance, encouragement, advice, comfort, and moral values. Communication is the lifeblood of families. Providing strong morals, values, and principles to the younger generation is mandatory for shaping the next generation of society. But this transfer of value system has been lost under the strong influence of the promotion of consumerism and commercialization of the whole world. The society in which we live has a great influence on what values we end up adopting.

India is a hierarchical society where identity is inherited. One can be Hindu or Muslim or Christian or so and so forth. India offers astounding variety in virtually every aspect of social life. Diversities of ethnic, linguistic, regional, economic, religious, class and caste groups crosscut the whole Indian society. Whether in north India or south India, Hindu or Muslim, urban or rural, people and social groups, each is ranked according to various essentials, unique features, and qualities. Although India is a political democracy, notions of complete equality are seldom evident in daily life. Ever-increasing conflicts and confusion have been taking away all the available opportunities and left us to be a self-appeasing society that is critical of each and everything except what that individual has been thinking to be right. The question is ” Are we growing as a citizen, or a community, or a country”?
