When designed holistically in accordance to the principles of Vastu, every single nook of your home can be optimised. But the ancient art also maintains that certain Vastu corners of the home have a higher energetic resonance than others. When you tune your focus on the design of these corners, it can serve to rejuvenate not only your space, but also your mental health—and sometimes, even gut positivity! This week, Namrataa Kripallani, a Vastukar from Pune, tells AD India where these potent Vastu corners are.
An Altar
Needless to say, the altar is an important focal point in any home. Vastu suggests the northeast is the ideal direction for a mandir (temple). This space, according to Vastu, fosters concentration and enhances your wisdom. While Vastu is a Hindu philosophy, it is non-denominational and can be customised to any faith. East and east-of-north-east (ENE) are also auspicious directions for an altar. If you are agnostic or an atheist, you can place a meditation mat, floor cushions, fairy lights and crystals here. “Remember, it’s a reflection of your inner sanctum, so personalise it freely,” Kripallani says.

Washrooms And Toilets
Vastu considers water closets as the epicentre of negativity, which is why in Vedic architecture, toilets were always built away from the main building. “Be extremely sensitive to the hygiene of your wet rooms,” the Vastukar says. “Place a small bowl of salt in the toilet to absorb negativity. Replace it every week, flushing down the used salt,” she continues. Deodorise your washrooms, with diffusers and potpourri available for this purpose. Vastu-compliant essential oils like lavender or rose work best in wet areas.

The Bedroom
“We spend a third of our lives sleeping,” avers Kripallani. Our bedrooms represent the soul and our inner worlds, while the living room represents how we relate to the external world. The ideal direction for a sleep sanctuary is in the southwest, but a north-of-north-west (NNW) bedroom can work especially well for a couple’s chemistry. An east and an east-of-north-east (ENE) bedroom works if you are single and wooing a suitable partner. Add blackout curtains, dim lighting, plush bedding and a music system that plays sleep sounds but get rid of televisions, electronic devices and mirrors from your sleeping area.
The Living Room
Designating all your social interactions towards the east of your residence will make you a social butterfly! If you are looking to build better connections to further your career or social life, choose a residence with an easterly or northerly living room. Decorate it with quirky furniture, playful decor and vibrant accents. Vastu recommends light shades of green, blue, and yellow if your living room is in the east and north, signifying peace and prosperity. Balance it with vibrant accents in red, if your living room is in the south and a serene white if it is in the west.

The Balcony And Window Sill
Your balcony and windows represent opportunity and portals that allow prana to flow in. “We often perceive these areas as drying spaces, but Vastu doesn’t recommend hanging wet clothes here,” Kripallani says. Instead, add patio seating, hang a wind chime, and grow an herb garden in these corners. Placing a rocking chair in a balcony or by the window sill is considered a symbol of good luck in Vastu.
The Utility Room
Here is how you can use Vastu principles to improve your mental health. You will be surprised to know that there are designated directions to place both a washing machine and a clothes dryer. They both have a churning motion and they clean dirty laundry, its best to place them in east-of-southeast (this reduces anxiety) or northwest (provides mental stability) or west-of-northwest (provides relaxation). “Please do not place them in any other direction, as this may lead to high anxiety levels,” the Vastukar advises.

The Dining Room
“Your dining table placements will affect your stomach, digestive system and assimilation of nutrients,” Kripallani says. Opt for an area that sparks conversations, decked in appetising hues like pastel oranges and yellows. A lucky symbol to place on a dining table is a bowl of fruit that is always replenished. This symbolises financial stability and good health.
Gadget Corner
We all have that gadget graveyard where we charge our laptops, tablets and smartphones, and dump our chargers, USB cables and portable batteries! But Vastu designates a specific southeast or northwest corner as your ‘tech temple’.“We live in an age where a lot of our career efficacy depends on our number of followers and digital footprints, and this tweak will turn the algorithm in your favour,” Kripallani says. Scientifically, this zone supposedly harmonises their electromagnetic frequency, making them work more efficiently! Make sure the wires are organised neatly together using cable managers.
“Intuitively, which corner of your home do you feel needs to be reworked?” Kripallani says. “Begin there first,” she concludes.
