CHARACTER is a nine-letter word, which plays a vital role in the whole of humanity. We will find 90% of common traits among the people of any society. So, the character is not limited to individual only, rather it has a bigger role in the form of the character of society as well as that of a nation also. It can be demonstrated by, what we do, how we do, and why we do. It builds over time and is additive in nature. It is developed through our experiences and what we choose to learn from them. Unfortunately, today we live in a culture that encourages us to be big about ourselves only.
Our character is made up of specific traits or qualities that determine, how we will respond to the situations, events, and circumstances in our life. Swami Vivekanand while explaining the importance of strong character said in 1894, ” Its neither the money, nor the fame, but it is only the character, that cleaves its way through the adamantine walls of difficulties. It’s only the inner strength of a person that always allows him to choose the right path even under the most trying and testing circumstances. Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it, whereas tree is the real thing.
Shakespeare wrote, ” To thine own self be true” meaning that you are what you believe in. You must continuously clarify what you stand for and what you will not stand for. Once you decide that you are going to build your life around some values, you refuse to compromise those values for anything. CHARACTER IS WHAT IS DEEP INSIDE US. Gandhi Ji rightly said, ” Be the change you want to see in others”. Nation-building is only possible through character building which can be achieved not by preaching and demonstrating, but by practicing in real life.
Any civilization in the world is known by the kind of people that live in it. It can be stated that anything and everything good that any nation in the world stands for, is the total number of values of the people living in it. No country is ever great because of its parliament, but because of its people are good and great. Civilization is, first of all, a moral thing. The morality of a society is alone the basis of civilization. Unfortunately, one of the major problems of our times we are facing is that we are all, I think, precious as personalities and backward as a character.
The current model of society is based on the only principle of maximizing the income of individuals, institutions, and nations. Success in life is measured by GDP of the countries, TRP of media channels, the market capitalization of the industries, footfalls in commercial malls, possession of luxurious commodities by the individuals, and an increase in per capita income. The ultimate result is iconizing of those people who reach the top of the ladder without caring for the value of the existence of the people in the society. The outcome is the creation of a cruel and selfish society in which a wealthy few are helped to flourish while the majority of the population experiences chronic poverty. Countries are being ruled by a narrow elite that has organized society for their own benefit at the expense of the vast mass of people. This is the change we have seen in the last few decades which have become a common character of the society and the nation’s /state’s world over.

National character is an expression that describes forms of collective perception, sensibility, wisdom, and conduct, which are shared by the individuals who inhabit a nation/state. The character of a nation is determined by the character of its people. Today we are facing an unprecedented mistrust of politicians, eroding values of institutions, unsustainable and uneven economic growth, government-controlled media, a significant increase in the dependency on public support, a breakdown of the traditional family unit, and finally an acute lacking personal responsibility. Suicides and homicides are like longitude and latitude comparison of well-being of any society. We have been observing an unprecedented spurt of these in the last few decades, despite our economy has grown considerably. So only economic growth can never be the benchmark of the nation’s development. The only solution is individual character development. Because a person with a good character knows right from wrong, makes the world a better place to live and practice, trustworthiness, honesty, responsibility, social sensitivity, maturity, and fairness. A person with good character and ethical values is an asset for the society and the nation. From any point, “Humanity is always better than the acquired capability”. Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds. And finally, it is easier to fight for one’s principles, than to live up to them. A CITIZEN WITH GOOD CHARACTER IS A NATION IN HIMSELF.
